In one of the most anticipated boxing contests of 2022. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennady “GGG” Golovkin meet in a trilogy bout on September 17, 2022, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Alvarez is defending his WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring super middleweight titles in the contest.

The first meeting between these two superstars took place in September 2017. That fight ended in a split draw after 12 rounds. The rematch took place one year later. Alvarez had his hand raised in victory on that night via a majority decision win.

Alvarez has a 57-2-2 career record. He had won eight straight following his draw with Golovkin, but his winning streak ended in May when he moved up to light heavyweight, where Dmitry Bivol defeated him via unanimous decision. Alvarez’s other loss was a September 2013 majority decision setback to Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Golovkin, who is 42-1-1, has not been as active as Alvarez. Since their rematch, Golovkin has gone 4-0. His most recent win was a ninth-round TKO victory over Ryota Murata in April.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin 3 prediction and pick

Alvarez and Golovkin may be getting older, but they are still two of the best boxers of the day. The 32-year-old Alvarez is the top fighter at super middleweight according to The Ring ratings. The “bible of boxing” also has the Mexican superstar listed as the No. 5 fighter in its pound-for-pound ratings. Golovkin is not The Ring champion at middleweight, but the 40-year-old Kazakh is the No. 1 rated fighter in that division according to the magazine.

This is an incredibly important fight. For Alvarez, a loss would hurt his reputation as one of the all-time greats, considering he is coming off the setback to Bivol. As for Golovkin, this could be the final fight of his career. He doesn’t want to end things on a sour note and zero wins against Alvarez.

Alvarez doesn’t need to change much from the first two fights, but he has to prevent one thing, and that is allowing Golovkin to build momentum and “steal” rounds. As for Golovkin, he needs to change some things. Golovkin’s best route to victory is not standing in front of Alvarez. He needs to get in, make contact and move off on angles. He cannot allow Alvarez to establish his jab and pick him apart as he stays on the centerline.

Pick: Canelo Alvarez to beat Gennady Golovkin.

Betting value with Alvarez

Judging how the past two fights went between these men, I don’t see either getting the stoppage. With that, one of the best bets for this fight is to pick it to go the distance.

Golovkin is a live underdog. With that, there is some value in putting some money down on him getting upset. He didn’t get blown out in either of the first two fights.

Another value bet is to pick the draw in this trilogy fight. The first fight ended that way, and the second could have as well. With that type of history, a draw is not a crazy pick.

However, I think the overall pick here is Alvarez to win via decision.

What’s at stake

Of course, the undisputed super middleweight crown is on the line when Alvarez and Golovkin fight for the third time. The legacy of both fighters will also be helped or hampered by this contest.

However, Alvarez, who is much younger and still has lucrative matchups he can participate in, needs this win much more than Golovkin.

I think he gets it, but he will not walk over Golovkin, and I expect a competitive matchup.

Pick: Canelo Alvarez to beat Gennady Golovkin.
