Bet on David Benavidez to Win Over Caleb Plant

  • What: David Benavidez vs. Caleb Plant
  • Date: March 25, 2023
  • Location: MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV
  • How to Watch: Showtime PPV

Two former super middleweight champions face off on March 25 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. In that upcoming matchup, current WBC interim super middleweight champion David Benavidez faces former IBF super middleweight titleholder, Caleb Plant.

According to The Ring, the 26-year-old Benavidez is the No. 1 ranked fighter at super middleweight, while the 30-year-old Plant  checks in at No. 2. The only fighter ranked higher than Benavidez and Plant in the super middleweight division is Canelo Alvarez, who holds The Ring, IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO titles.

Benavidez brings a perfect 26-0 record with 23 knockouts into this matchup. He is coming off a May 2022 TKO win over David Lemieux. Plant is 22-1 in his career with 13 knockout victories. Plant’s only loss was his November 2021 TKO setback to Alvarez. He bounced back from that stoppage defeat with an October knockout win over Anthony Dirrell.

David Benavidez vs. Caleb Plant prediction and pick

This matchup could be a game-changer for both men. If David Benavidez wins, he will continue his ascent up the super middleweight pecking order and he could be in line for a shot at Canelo Alvarez and his titles. On the other hand, if Plant wins, the victory puts him back in the mix as one of the top fighters in the division, something that was called into question when he lost to Alvarez.

The thing about this fight is that it is coming at a time when one man might already have hit his peak, while the other is still working toward the apex of his career. The four-year difference in the ages of these men might not seem all that significant on paper, but it is, mostly because Benavidez is in that stage of his career where he realizes how important a win against a name opponent like Plant is. This is the fight where we will see the most serious and focused version of Benavidez we have ever seen. That fact will be a problem for Plant.

This will be an exciting fight with a lot of moments of action and intrigue, but as the bout wears on, Benavidez will slowly, but surely, separate himself from Plant and he will win the contest.

Pick: David Benavidez to beat Caleb Plant.

Who has the edge?

Neither of these men has one-punch knockout power, but they both have the ability to get stoppage wins. They do that through attrition — breaking down their opponents over time and sapping their energy. The difference between the two is that Benavidez has more power than Plant. With that, he has the edge in boxing in this fight. He puts more pressure on his opponents than Plant, he’s more active with his combinations and he’s more willing to invest in body punches early to score head shots later in his fights.

Plant will score well early with his jabs and active footwork, but he will also be forced to fight off his back foot a great deal as Benavidez pressures him and pushes forward. Plant needs to control the entire fight if he hopes to get the win. I don’t think he can do that with how active Benavidez is with his combinations.

Prediction: David Benavidez to beat Caleb Plant.
