Boxing: Jake Paul vs Hasim Rahman Jr. Picks

  • Date & Location: Saturday, August 6, 2022, at Madison Square Garden in New York City
  • Time: 9 p.m. ET
  • How to Watch: Showtime Pay-Per-View

Jake Paul‘s next boxing match will be the toughest test of his career — at least on paper. On Saturday, August 6, Paul, who is 5-0 as a pro boxer, faces the 12-1 Hasim Rahman Jr. in the main event of a Showtime pay-per-view card at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Paul started his boxing career with bouts against YouTuber AnEsonGib and former NBA player Nate Robinson. From there, he faced former Bellator and ONE MMA Champion Ben Askren. His next opponent was ex-UFC titleholder, Tyron Woodley. Outside of his first contest with Woodley. Which he won via split decision; Paul has scored knockouts in each of his boxing outings.

Hasim Rahman Jr. is the son of former heavyweight boxing champ Hasim Rahman. The 31-year-old has been a pro since 2017. He was 12-0 with six knockouts heading into his most recent outing. That fight was a TKO loss to Kenzie Morrison for the vacant WBC_USNBC heavyweight title.

The 25-year-old Paul was initially scheduled to face Tommy Fury at Madison Square Garden. That fight fell through when Fury could not get into the United States.

Jake Paul vs. Hasim Rahman Jr.prediction and pick

In order to receive his full pay for this fight, Hasim Rahman Jr. has said he has to meet some strict weight requirements. Rahman, who weighed in at 224 pounds for his April 2022 contest against James Morrison, is looking at a 200-pound limit on weigh-in day. Then, there is a max limit of 214 pounds during a weight check at noon on fight day. According to Rahman, every pound he is over those numbers reduces his purse by 25 percent. With that, Rahman’s stamina, power, and ability to take a punch could all become issues for the more experienced boxer. When you add that Rahman is taking the fight on short notice, I expect he will spend most of his prep time cutting weight.

Paul is improving every time he steps into the ring. He obviously takes the sport of boxing seriously, and he is clearly training to be the best boxer he can be he is not someone a fighter like Rahman should take lightly. His knockout win over former UFC champ Tyron Woodley showed he is no slouch.

Paul has a good fight IQ, and he has developed into a boxer who doesn’t just look for a knockout with every punch. He has shown patience and the ability to time his power punches.

Betting Value With Paul

If Rahman had been given time for a full camp and been allowed to compete at a more comfortable 220+ pounds, I think he would be the favorite to win here. However, Paul was smart enough to stack the contract in his favor and put Rahman at a distinct disadvantage.

With that being said, if you think the more experienced Rahman should be the favorite, I would say a bet for him to get things done with an early knockout would be the wisest choice.

My pick is that Paul will do his best to avoid Rahman early, dance around the outside, use his jab and footwork to sap the energy from his opponent, and then move in for the knockout once Rahman is tired and his hands drop. I think Paul gets the knockout in the second half of the contest.

Prediction: Pick: Jake Paul to knockout Hasim Rahman Jr.

What’s on the line

The news that Nate Diaz is fighting his final bout for the UFC in September broke earlier this week. Diaz and Paul have been talked about as a potential matchup in the ring, and if Paul wins here and Diaz escapes his bout with the highly touted Khamzat Chimaev without much damage, we could see a Nate Diaz vs. Jake Paul boxing match in late 2022 or early 2023.
