Lomachenko Massive Favorite vs Jason Sosa

Vasyl Lomachenko (-1200) vs Jason Sosa (+1250), Draw (+3300)

Vasyl Lomachenko (7-1) will defend his WBO junior lightweight title against Jason Sosa (20-1-4) on April 8 at the MGM National Harbor. It’ll be his second title defense since winning the title in June of last year.

Lomachenko is a rising star in professional boxing, and is arguably the greatest amatuer boxer of all time. After winning his second Olympic gold medal in 2012, the Ukrainian champion decided to turn pro. He’s since risen to the top at break-neck speed.

He earned a title shot after only one professional fight, and claimed his first belt in his third. His creative and highly technical style has made him a fan favorite and he’s already widely considered to be one of the best pound-for-pound boxers. But in order to truly make a name for himself, he’ll need more high-level fights.

Unfortunately, Jason Sosa isn’t exactly what he’s looking for. Sosa has an impressive fight record but hasn’t exactly battled with the best of the best. His two fights in 2016 were against Stephen Smith and Javier Fortuna, two little-known boxers. It’s unlikely he’ll pose much of a threat to Lomachenko.

In his most recent fight against Nicholas Walters, Lomachenko was so dominant that Walters threw in the towel after the seventh round. The decision to quit was met with jeers from the crowd, but there was no way Walters could come back in that fight. Lomachenko had patiently picked Walters apart for seven rounds, and the Jamaican had nothing left to give.

Lomachenko and his promoter, Bob Arum, had been aiming for a fight against WBA champion Jezreel Corrales or a rematch against Orlando Salido (who upset Lomachenko in the latter’s second career bout) but both fights failed to materialize. Arum has his eyes set on a super-fight between Lomachenko and Manny Pacquiao in the not-too-distant future. For now, he’ll have to get through Sosa.

At -1200, there’s very little money to be made from Lomachenko. But from what we saw from him against Walters, it’s hard to imagine him losing to a fighter like Jason Sosa. His boxing IQ and technical ability are on a different level, and the upcoming fight will just be more padding for his resume.
