Boxing: Teofimo Lopez vs Pedro Campa Picks

  • Date & Location: Saturday, August 13, 2022, at Resorts World Las Vegas Event Center in Las Vegas, Nevada
  • Time: 10 p.m. ET
  • How to Watch: ESPN, ESPN+

Teofimo Lopez lost a lot in his last fight. Lopez was 15-0 and coming off an upset October 2020 unanimous decision win over Vasiliy Lomachenko. That win allowed Lopez to retain the IBF lightweight title, but more importantly, it put the WBA (super), WBO, and The Ring titles, which had belonged to Lomachenko, over his shoulders. In November 2021, all of those titles transferred to George Kambosos Jr., who earned a split decision victory over Lopez at Madison Square Garden in New York City. On Friday, August 13, Lopez (16-1) returns to the ring to face Pedro Campa (34-1-1).

Lopez is the No. 2 ranked fighter in the lightweight division according to The Ring ratings. He trails Devin Haney, who took all of Kambosos’ titles in June 2022 (they rematch in October), and Kambosos. Campa is not rated according to The Ring.

Campa is coming off a March TKO win over Carlos Sanchez Valadez.

Teofimo Lopez vs. Pedro Campa prediction and pick

Teofimo Lopez looked poised for big things. His win over Vasiliy Lomachenko had Lopez and those around him salivating at the prospect of a future where Lopez, Devin Haney, Gervonta Davis, and Ryan Garcia battled for supremacy for years through multiple weight divisions. The loss to Kambosos put a question mark next to the name of Lopez. He has the chance to get back in the mix with a statement win over Pedro Campa.

The big worry about Lopez might be his focus ahead of this fight. Campa does not have the name recognition of his previous few opponents, but he still needs to approach this fight as serious business because his future depends on it. In a crowded weight division, Lopez could become a forgotten man if he puts in anything but an excellent performance against Campa.

The Nevada Athletic Commission recently declined to allow Campa to fight Jose Zepeda (No. 3 rated at junior welterweight by The Ring) because the sanctioning body thought the bout would be a mismatch. With that, Campa is being looked at as a tune-up for Lopez before he dives back into the top of the division. However, those fights can be dangerous.

Pick: Teofimo Lopez to defeat Pedro Campa.

Who has the edge

Lopez is better than Campa at every aspect of boxing. I don’t think Lopez will fall victim to what cost him his titles against Kambosos, and that was his feeling of invincibility after his win over Lomachenko. I suspect we will see a humbled Lopez in this matchup. I think he starts out slow, establishes his pace and range, and then when he feels comfortable, he gets the stoppage win before the midpoint of the fight.

Prediction: Teofimo Lopez to defeat Pedro Campa via knockout.

Betting value with Lopez

Lopez is the monster favorite, so there is not a lot of value in betting him to win. However, prop bets might present some value with the former champ. The pick here is that Lopez will end the fight via knockout and that he will do so before the start of the seventh round.

With the odds Campa is getting, there might be some value in putting something down on him to pull off the upset, but that amount should not be something one is uncomfortable losing because it’s an enormous longshot that Campa will win.

Pick: Teofimo Lopez to defeat Pedro Campa.
