Boxing: Andy Ruiz Jr. vs. Luis Ortiz Picks

  • Date & Location: Sunday, Sept. 4, 2022, at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California
  • Time: 9 p.m. ET
  • How to Watch: FOX Sports PPV

Andy Ruiz Jr. made history in 2019 when he became the first heavyweight boxing champion of Mexican descent. He achieved that status in surprising fashion, knocking out the previously unbeaten Anthony Joshua. With the win, Ruiz claimed the WBA (super), IBF, WBO and IBO heavyweight titles. Ruiz was a massive +1200 underdog in that matchup.

When Ruiz and Joshua had their rematch in December of the same year, Ruiz was again an underdog, but the odds against him had tightened considerably. Ruiz entered that matchup at +195 to Joshua’s -250. The rematch went the 12-round distance, with Joshua reclaiming the titles he lost in the initial bout.

Ruiz has only fought once since that setback. He scored a unanimous decision win over Chris Arreola in May 2021.

Currently the No. 6 ranked fighter in The Ring heavyweight ratings, Ruiz (34-2), faces Luis Ortiz (33-2-0-2) in the main event of a Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) card on FOX Sports PPV on September 4 at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Ortiz ended an 11-month break in his schedule in January with a sixth-round TKO win over Chris Martin. Ortiz is the No. 7 rated fighter at heavyweight according to The Ring, his two career losses have both come to Deontay Wilder. Wilder knocked him out in the 10th round of their 2018 bout and in the seventh round of their 2019 rematch. Both those contests were for Wilder’s WBC heavyweight title.

Andy Ruiz vs Luis Ortiz prediction and pick

At 32, Andy Ruiz is still relatively young in the heavyweight boxing game. The same cannot be said of his 43-year-old opponent, Luis Ortiz. This is a curious matchup. While it makes sense in the heavyweight ratings, it doesn’t move the needle much for Ruiz, who saw his status as a fan favorite explode with his win over Joshua. As far as drawing eyeballs, this is not the best matchup for Ruiz.

I suspect this bout is kind of a feeling out matchup for Ruiz and his handlers. Ruiz was not ready for the Joshua rematch and the Arreola bout was not a great test for him. Ortiz will test Ruiz.

The big danger in this fight for Ruiz is the power of Ortiz. He has 28 wins by knockout and although he lost to Wilder, he had the champ in big trouble in the final 30 seconds of their first meeting. Ortiz is a strong fundamental boxer, with a good jab to go with his incredible power. Ortiz has the skill and power to hurt Ruiz.

What we need to see from Ruiz is the fighter who beat Joshua in 2019 and less the fighter who lost in his rematch to Joshua and struggled with Arreola. If Ruiz wants to reclaim his standing as a legit title threat, he needs to take his fight seriously and be ready for everything a skilled veteran like Ortiz can bring.

Betting value with Andy Ruiz

The odds are tighter than one would expect in this matchup, because no one knows what type of effort Ruiz is going to give in September. If he shows up and fights like he did in his last two outings, Ortiz could pull off the upset. With that, he is a live dog.

I’m inclined to believe that Ruiz knows this might be his last big chance at getting back in the mix. With that, I think he comes to this fight prepared, in shape and ready for the southpaw style of his opponent.

What’s at stake

There has been talk that Ruiz could get a title shot with a win over Ortiz in September. I don’t know if that is idle chatter, but with Tyson Fury’s retirement looking like it’s a real thing, this bout is incredibly important for the former champ, which is all the more reason he should take this matchup seriously.
