Bet on Oleksandr Usyk vs Anthony Joshua 2 | Boxing Picks

  • Date & Location: Saturday, August 20, 2022 at Jeddah Super Dome in Saudi Arabia
  • Time: TBD
  • How to Watch: DAZN

Anthony Joshua was 22-0 when Andy Ruiz Jr. knocked him out in the seventh round of their June 2019 matchup at Madison Square Garden. The loss cost Joshua the WBA super heavyweight title as well as the IBF, WBO and IBO heavyweight belts. In December of that same year, Joshua got those trophies back when he defeated Ruiz by decision. He retained his titles with a December 2020 knockout win over Kubrat Pulev. In September 2021, Joshua lost his belts again when Oleksandr Usyk defeated him via unanimous decision at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. Joshua and Usyk run back that bout on August 20 at Jeddah Super Dome Arena in Saudi Arabia.

According to The Ring magazine, Usyk is the No. 1 ranked heavyweight boxer in the world. Joshua checks in at No. 2. The “bible of boxing” also has Usyk listed as the No. 2 ranked pound-for-pound boxer in the world. He is the only heavyweight competitor on the pound-for-pound list.

Usyk has a career record of 19-0 with 13 knockouts. Before he moved up to heavyweight, Usyk held WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO and The Ring cruiserweight titles.

Oleksandr Usyk vs Anthony Joshua 2 prediction and pick

Anthony Joshua did not use his size, reach or power advantages against Oleksandr Usyk in their first matchup. I expect that will be one of the changes the former champion makes in the rematch. Joshua tried to outbox the boxer in their first meeting and it cost him on the scorecards. Ahead of the second meeting between these two, Joshua, who has 22 knockouts in 24 career victories, has said he is going to look for an early KO in the rematch.

If that is the case, Joshua could put himself in danger against the superior technical fighter. If Usyk uses his speed and boxing skills to avoid the powerful brawling of Joshua, it will sap the energy from the ex-champ and make him easier for the current champ to score on and avoid any counters coming his way.

With that being said, going for the early knockout might be the best option for Joshua in this battle.

Usyk might not have the professional experience of his opponent, but the 2012 Olympic gold medal winner has a ton of high-level amateur experience. With that amount of ring time, Joshua is not going to put Usyk in a situation he has not experienced before.

Pick: Oleksandr Usyk to beat Anthony Joshua.

Betting value with Usyk

Joshua has made some sweeping changes ahead of this rematch, adding Robert Garcia as his head coach and putting a team together that will help carry a positive mindset into the second Usyk bout. If you believe those changes will be enough for him to overcome the technical ability of his opponent, then a bet for Joshua to win via knockout makes sense.

I don’t think that will be the outcome.

If Joshua employs an aggressive style from the start and looks for the KO, he will run out of gas and that will cost him as the fight goes on. I think, even with the perfect game plan from Joshua, that Usyk will win this fight. If Joshua goes for the knockout, I think Usyk wins via KO himself in the second half of the fight.

Prediction: Oleksandr Usyk to beat Anthony Joshua via knockout.

What’s at stake

It’s hard to say what is at stake in this fight other than the titles that Usyk will bring with him. What’s probably not at stake is a matchup between the winner of this fight and Tyson Fury as Fury, who “retired” after his win over Dillian Whyte, said he wants £500m to face the winner of this contest.
