The 2022 Cricket World Cup may have only just finished, but it hasn’t stopped the sportsbooks from making England their favorites to defend their newly won title in the 2024 T20 World Cup.

The win was England’s second T20 world title, and with English white ball cricket currently in a very strong place, they will be looking to defend the title in two years time.
As things stand, England is now the world champions in both white ball formats. They are the ODI world champions, having won the last 50 Over World Cup back in 2019, and they are now the T20 world champions, becoming the first team to hold both white ball World Cups, after their win over Pakistan last Sunday.
Where is the 2024 T20 World Cup?
The 2024 T20 World Cup might sound like a long way off. But it is scheduled to take place in June 2024, so already, it’s just over 18 months down the line. Teams will already be planning for it, well, at least they should be. So in theory, the majority of the players we’ve just seen performing in Australia will still be active when the next edition of the tournament comes around.
There will be some notable absentees in 2024. Australia captain Aaron Finch probably won’t be playing, and who knows, Virat Kohli might have called time on his career by then. But by and large, it will be the bulk of the same players.
The competition is taking place in the West Indies and the United States, and it will be the first time an ICC tournament will host matches in the USA. And with the announcement that Major League Cricket will be starting in the USA, in July 2023, it’s a great time to be a cricket fan in the States.

In total, the 2024 T20 World Cup will involve 20 teams playing 55 matches. As hosts, USA are already qualified for the 2024 T20 World, as are the West Indies. The top eight teams from the 2022 T20 World Cup have also secured their places in the competition in 2024. They are England, Pakistan, India, New Zealand, Australia, Sri Lanka, South Africa, and the Netherlands.
Bangladesh and Afghanistan have also confirmed their places via world rankings, meaning the remaining eight spots will be filled by qualifiers. Zimbabwe and Ireland are likely to be amongst the favorites to win two of those spaces. Now, let’s take a look at the betting to win in 2024.
Who is the favorite to win the 2024 T20 World Cup?
As you can see from our below odds table, it’s Jos Buttler and his England team. Already the top cricket betting sites have installed them as their +275 betting favorites. The usual suspects aren’t far behind. India is +300, and Australia is +400. Both these sides are capable of toppling England, but both have work to do in regards to the makeup of their teams, and also in the case of India, their in-game strategy.

For example, as we’ve already alluded to, Australia are likely to need a new captain and a new opening batter, with Aaron Finch likely to be replaced. And as for India, if their chastening 10 wicket defeat to England in the semi-final doesn’t tell them they need a rethink, then nothing probably will.
It was stated in the aftermath of the semi-final defeat to England, that India were playing cricket from a different era. And it was hard to disagree. That said, the conditions in the last World Cup were favorable to English bowlers, and maybe it was just the case that on the day, they were too good for the Indian batters – as opposed to mooted outdated game plan.
Can anybody break the big three of England, India, and Australia?
In the best of the rest, Pakistan comes next at +600, then New Zealand at +700, and South Africa at +800.
Of those three teams, Pakistan has an opening batting combination to compete with anybody in the world. They also have one of the best all round bowling attacks. If they can discover some middle order batters, they will be real contenders.
I feel in the case of New Zealand, they are coming to the end of a cycle of top quality players, who will be another 18 months older when this competition starts. The Kiwis have some great leaders in the side, none more so than Kane Williamson. But the likes of Trent Boult and Tim Southee, for so long stalwarts of this team, aren’t getting any younger, and there seems to be little coming through to replace these guys.
As for South Africa, they showed real potential going into this competition, and their loss to the Netherlands was a real shocker. If they can put that out of their system and continue building, they could also be genuine contenders in 2024.

Our Pick
A lot can change in 18 months, form, and injury etc, so it is way too early to be making a serious cricket pick. But looking at the betting, I can only see the odds on Australia shortening in the next 18 months. So if you like the Aussie’s chances, this could be the best time to nail down the best odds on them winning the trophy.
