Is Dinesh Karthik the man to fire RCB to Indian Premier League glory?

The Indian Premier League is into its second week and with RCB making a decent start, we look at their chances of winning the competition and also if the signing of Indian wicketkeeper-batsman, Dinesh Karthik, could be the catalyst to win Royal Challengers Bangalore their first-ever Indian Premier League title.

The 2022 IPL is looking more and more like an open competition with every passing match. There is no stand-out team, and the teams that have dominated over the past five years – Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings – look far weaker this time around.

RCB; The Perennial Indian Premier League Underachievers

The perennial underachievers are Royal Challengers Bangalore, also simply known as RCB. For years they have been captained by the legendary Indian batsman, Virat Kholi, and have attracted huge franchise cricket names from around the world such as Chris Gayle from the West Indies, and South Africa’s AB de Villiers.

For whatever reasons, that combination always seemed to fail RCB and they were always beaten by better-balanced sides, maybe with less ego-driven players.

This season RCB has done away with most of the sideshow and signed some, shall we say, lower-profile players. Yes, the intimidating figure that is Virat Kohli is still there, but he is no longer the captain.

South African middle-order batter, Faf du Plessis has that honor. He was appointed skipper in place of Kohli ahead of this season. Big-name signings have still arrived in the shape of Australia’s Glenn Maxwell, but they have been supplemented with names like Finn Allen from New Zealand, David Willey from England, and veteran part-time commentator and part-time cricketer, Dinesh Karthik

The signing of Karthik could be pivotal to any success RCB might have. He was released by his previous franchise Kolkata Knight Riders, which chose to go in a different direction. But the 36-year-old wasn’t short of takers!

Could Dinesh Karthik be the man to fire RCB to their first-ever IPL title?

Just a couple of months shy of his 37th birthday, Karthik has been there and done it in cricket. He is clearly in the twilight of his career. Indeed, some might have already believed he was retired, judging by the amount of time he has spent in a commentary box over the past 12-18 months.

But he is just the sort of nuts and bolts cricketer that RCB has been crying out for. Karthik is a finisher, a guy who gets the job done under pressure. He’s a wicketkeeper by trade and is also a character, the sort who won’t shy away from telling a captain where he is going wrong.

Karthik does the dirty work, the sort of stuff that usually goes unheralded. He is a gritty performer, but an underrated one.

Already in his three innings for RCB, Karthik has a strike rate of over 200. His scores so far are 32 (14 balls), 14 (7 balls), and 44 (23 balls).

In his latest innings, his 44 runs against Rajasthan Royals earlier this week were his most vital to date. That cameo innings won RCB a match they were looking for all money to lose, and it came against one of the joint favorites to win this season’s IPL

It’s winning these matches that is crucial, and this is exactly what Dinesh Karthik is an expert in doing.

Who is the Favourite to Win the 2022 IPL?

The best cricket betting sites all have Royal Challengers Bangalore amongst their favorites to win the 2022 Indian Premier League

Alongside Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals, BetOnline makes RCB their +500 joint favorites to win this year’s crown.

Surprisingly the two new franchises are in the betting mix, with Gujarat Titans at +800 and Lucknow Super Giants at +900. The big shock this season – so far – is seeing the defending champions, Chennai Super Kings, down at +2200. This is what happens when a team doesn’t build on its success.

IPL 2022 Betting Picks

So who is RCB’s main rivals when it comes to winning this season’s IPL? The good thing is that we’ve already had a chance to look at all of the teams, which makes selecting our cricket picks a bit easier – as we now have some form to go on.

Royal Challengers Bangalore

I’m going for RCB to get the job done this year. They look better balanced than ever and have a whole heap of experience and know-how in the team.

With players like De Plessis, Kohli, Willey, Maxwell, Hazlewood, and of course Karthik in the team, I’m happy to make RCB my pick to win the IPL at +500.

Outside Bet; Lucknow Super Giants

Coached by Andy Flower, and captained by the experienced KL Rahul, the Super Giants have hit the ground running in their debut season in the IPL.

With Quinton de Kock, Evin Lewis, and Marcos Stoinis making up their top 4 along with Rahul, the Super Giants certainly have the batting to give anybody a game. I just wonder about their bowling, as I feel it has holes in it.

But at +900 Lucknow has a chance, and is worth a small wager. It would also make a wonderful story if they could win the IPL the first time asking.
