League of Legends Worlds Returns to US: Complete Preview & Picks

  • What: 2026 League of Legends World Championship
  • Date: Tuesday, January 13th-17th, 2026
  • Location: Allen, Texas, and New York City, New York
  • How to Watch: Twitch

The sixteenth iteration of the League of Legends World Championship makes its triumphant return to North America this fall, marking the first time since 2022 that the prestigious tournament visits the United States. The Credit Union of Texas Event Center in Allen, just north of Dallas-Fort Worth, will host the Play-In Stage, Swiss Stage, and Playoffs.

At the same time, New York City takes center stage for the Grand Finals. It’s the third World Championship to be hosted in New York City after the 2016 and 2022 editions.

Eighteen teams will qualify based on placement within their regional leagues, with powerhouses from Korea’s LCK, China’s LPL, and Europe’s LEC leading the charge. T1 of Korea are the three-time defending champions, making them the team to beat.

However, challengers abound: Gen.G earned support largely due to roster continuity, having retained its championship-winning lineup from last season, while Hanwha Life Esports picked up Worlds 2025 Finals MVP Gumayusi and legendary jungler Kanavi, positioning themselves as serious title contenders.

With the tournament’s innovative format still to be announced and global competition fiercer than ever, Worlds 2026 promises unforgettable moments for esports fans worldwide.

Gen.G

Gen.G retained the same five players for the 2026 season, keeping their dominant “Ki-Ca-Cho-Rul-Du” roster intact after a heartbreaking 2025 campaign.

The team never tasted defeat after losing the LCK Cup final, claiming the only LCK trophy of the year. They won back-to-back Mid-Season Invitational titles, and broke the record for the most consecutive best-of series victories. Yet despite their dominance, they fell to KT Rolster at Worlds, extending a painful pattern of semifinal exits.

Led by mid laner Chovy, widely considered among the best players in the world, Gen.G enters 2026 with continuity as its strength. The organization made the right moves in the offseason, bringing in head coach Ryu to lead this superteam.

With jungler Canyon re-signed and the entire roster committed to finally capturing the Summoner’s Cup, Gen.G has the experience, synergy, and motivation to break through. The five returning players have all been considered the best in the world at their roles, making them the team to beat heading into Allen and New York.

They’re understandable favorites at even money, but I’d pass in favor of a team with better odds.

T1

The defending champions enter 2026 seeking an unprecedented fourth consecutive world title. T1’s League of Legends team has won a record six League of Legends World Championship titles (2013, 2015, 2016, 2023, 2024, and 2025), cementing their status as the most decorated organization in esports history.

However, the surprise departure of three-time world champion ADC Gumayusi has opened changes to the roster, with 19-year-old Kim ‘Peyz’ Su-hwan signing from JD Gaming to fill the role.

The core remains formidable. Legendary mid laner Faker, contracted through 2029, continues to defy age and expectations, while support Keria and jungler Oner provide world-class playmaking.

T1 drew attention for its pursuit of a historic achievement, entering the year to secure a third consecutive world championship, now a fourth.

Can they adapt to roster changes and maintain their dynasty, or will the transition leave them vulnerable to challengers? I’m a fan of T1 at this price, and believe it’s an absolute steal and a value play at +175.

Hanwha Life Esports

Perhaps the most intriguing storyline heading into Worlds 2026 belongs to Hanwha Life Esports. The organization has confirmed two major signings: Worlds 2025 Finals MVP Gumayusi and legendary jungler Kanavi, who returns to Korea after dominating China’s LPL. Gumayusi reunites with former T1 teammate Zeus, who won two World Championships alongside the ADC.

With mid laner Zeka and support Delight retained, HLE boasts a roster that rivals the league’s giants on paper. The team won their first trophy during the 2024 Summer Split and triumphed at First Stand, building momentum. The integration of Kanavi and Gumayusi completes a team full of world-class stars, capable of challenging for every available trophy.

As tempting as it is to take a shot on HLE at +300, I’d have to pass on them this time.
