One of the most significant events of the eSports year is upon us. The 2022 League of Legends World Championship tournament starts on Thursday, September 29, with the play-in stage of the event. The event’s first step sees 12 teams from around the world battle it out for a spot in the tournament. The qualifying teams get the chance to claim a portion of the over $2 million (US Dollar) prize pool.
Following the play-in stage, the 2022 League of Legends World Championship tournament moves to New York for the Group Stage (October 7-16) and the quarterfinals (October 20-23) before moving to State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia, for the semifinal round (October 29-30). Royal Never Give Up had a great start to the 2022 LOL season, but the squad made a roster change ahead of the summer split. RNG moved Chen “Bin” Zebin to Bilibili Gaming for Chen “Breathe” Chen. That move saw the team put up a better summer record than spring record, but its 13-3 finish landed RNG the fourth seed of the LPL, where they were knocked out by their first opponent, the 2021 World Champions, Edward Gaming.
RNG avoided becoming the first ever team to win MSI but not make Worlds in the same year by beating LNG Esports in the LPL regional finals.
RNG has a deep roster and has shown they can win, but they have struggled to put all the pieces together when it counts. The team could be a dark horse to win the 2022 LOL World Championship.
