2021 LOL World Championship Preview with Betting Picks

October sees the start of the 2021 League Of Legends World Championship, with Reykjavik in Iceland hosting the month-long Esports tournament.

China was originally due to host the event at various venues, but after months of rearrangements and rescheduling, Reykjavik was confirmed as the sole host of the event.

22 of the top LOL teams from 11 regions around the world are taking part, playing for their share of the $2.2M pot. There were supposed to be 24 teams competing, but due to Covid travel restrictions, two sides are unable to attend, making it a 22 team competition.

Big names of the Esports world like FunPlus Phoenix, DWG KIA and Edward Gaming will be taking part. And they make up the favorites in the outright winner betting market.

The defending champions are DWG KIA, and I believe they have what it takes to win the world championship again in 2021.

Group Betting

The draw for the four groups took place on 22nd September, with this part of the competition starting on 11th October.

Three teams are drawn in each group, with one of the four Play-In winners making up the fourth position.

With all the teams not yet qualified for the four groups, making picks isn’t too easy. A lot can change over the next couple of weeks, so be careful with your stakes!

Below is the latest betting and my Esport picks to win the individual groups:-

Group A Betting and Pick

  • FunPlus Phoenix -125
  • DWG KIA +120
  • Rogue +2000
  • Qualifier +2800

Wow, what a draw this is. Two of the favorites to win the whole competition pitched together in the same group.

The match between the two sides takes place on Monday 11th October, and the winner of it will most likely top the group.

FunPlus Phoenix are -137.5 to win that showdown. DWG KIA are +100

I think that the defending champions will come out on top in this clash, and I make DWG my pick to win the opener and go on to top the group.

Group B Betting and Pick

  • Edward Gaming -225
  • T1 +225
  • 100 Thieves +1600
  • Qualifier +2500

Another group that looks to be a two-horse race.

The main protagonists meet on Tuesday 12th October. By that point, Edward Gaming will already have faced 100 Thieves on the previous day, and if as expected they are victorious, a win over main rivals T1 will put them well on course to topping the group.

I can see Edward Gaming getting off to a flyer here and they are my Esports pick to win Group B.

Group C Betting

  • Royal Never Give Up -160
  • Fnatic +350
  • PSG Talon +550
  • Qualifier +600

Royal Never Give Up gets their campaign underway on Monday 11th October when they square off against PSG Talon.

The fourth favorites to win the championship are -275 to beat PSG in their opening fixture, and I can’t see them losing this one.

The showdown which may go a long way to deciding who wins the group with Fnatic takes place on the following Tuesday. RNGU are -225 to win that match-up, with Fnatic at +162.5.

This one looks a bit easier to predict than groups A and B, and I’m going for Royal Never Give Up to top Group C for my betting pick.

Group D Betting

  • MAD Lions +175
  • Qualifier +175
  • Gen.C +200
  • Team Liquid +1100

Probably the weakest group on paper, not better highlighted by the fact that a team who hasn’t even qualified yet is joint favorite to win it.

With the fourth team likely to be the winner, I’m reluctant to make a pick for this group.

Odds of +175 on a qualifier sound like the best bet, but I can’t make a call like that with any certainty.
