2022 Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix Picks

  • Charles Leclerc (+100) is a slight favorite over Max Verstappen (+130) to win his home event in Monaco.
  • Mercedes’ George Russell (+2000) and Lewis Hamilton (+2500) made big strides at the Spanish GP last weekend.
  • The 2022 Monaco Grand Prix will take place this Sunday, May 29

Max Verstappen is the betting favorite to win the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship following his third-consecutive triumph of the season in Barcelona on Sunday. However, the Dutchman’s victory couldn’t be less impressive when put into perspective.

First, the reigning world champion’s much-faster rival Charles Leclerc lost car power at the midway point of the race, and then Sergio Perez was instructed to let his Red Bull teammate pass him. As the 24-year-old aims for his fifth win of the F1 campaign, let’s check the odds for this weekend’s 2022 Monaco GP. Here’s also where you can find the top betting sites for Formula 1 in 2022.

Leclerc vs Verstappen

Charles Leclerc (+100) cried out “no, no, no” when his Ferrari lost power on Lap 27 of the Spanish GP, ruining what seemed like a sure victory. Enjoying a 40+ point lead in the drivers’ standings just over a month ago, the Monaco native now trails Max Verstappen (+130) by six points.

Oddsmakers have made Leclerc the slight favorite after the 24-year-old ran faster than Red Bull all weekend. His car is also likely better suited for his home track’s slow- and medium-speed corners. The Ferrari driver actually claimed pole position at the Monaco Grand Prix last year before his car broke down before the race began.

Max Verstappen spun off the 2.8-mile Barcelona-Catalunya circuit early and suffered from a DRS flap malfunction before his teammate Sergio Perez (+1800) graciously allowed him to claim his fourth win of the year. The Spaniard called the request “unfair” before giving up what would have been his third-career F1 victory.

Perez currently sits third in the standings, 19 points behind Leclerc, but if his Red Bull team isn’t going to allow him to win a race (even on a day where he recorded the fastest lap), he’s a hard man to bet on.

Mercedes moving in the right direction

Mercedes teased more upgrades for Monaco after securing their best result of the season in Barcelona. Perhaps finally, over their porpoising issues, George Russell (+2000) placed third, and Lewis Hamilton (+2500), the winner of the previous five Spanish GPs, battled all the way back from 19th to finish fifth.

After outperforming the seven-time world champion in five consecutive races, Russell is the preferred play. Either way, a competitive Mercedes team could add some added drama and excitement to an F1 season that has become a two-horse race.

Best Bet

Ferrari’s last win in Monaco was in 2017 while Verstappen claimed the event just last year. Surely, however, Leclerc is due for some good luck after last weekend’s heartbreaking loss. If his engine problems don’t continue to wreak havoc this weekend, we like Leclerc to finish atop the podium in a storybook ending in Monaco.
