The see-saw battle between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen is showing no signs of slowing down. With the Formula 1 betting season winding down, we tell you who to bet to win the driver championship right now! These are the most up-to-date betting predictions on this nail-biting competition.
It seems like the online sportsbooks switch the betting favorite for the futures bet every week. But after the events of the Russian Grand Prix, here’s how the betting lines stand:
Formula 1 Current Standings
Hamilton ran away with the Russian Grand Prix, taking first place by more than 53 seconds in a rain-soaked frenzy. It was the seven-time champion’s fifth win of the season — which helped him regain the lead in the drivers’ standings. He’s now up to 246.5 points, two ahead of Verstappen.
Despite Hamilton’s big win, Verstappen stole the show last weekend. He started dead last in 20th in Sochi, this after taking not one grid penalty, but two. One was due to “causing” the crash with Verstappen the race before in Italy and the other was after surpassing the three-engine-switch quota mandated by the league.
Despite the huge disadvantage, Verstappen finished second overall. The key to Verstappen’s “damage control” was changing his tires early on as the rain was coming on. With the fix, Verstappen blazed past the field and kept pace with Hamilton in the big picture.
Six races remain in the F1 season and when the battle is as tight as it is between Hamilton-Verstappen, no lap is inconsequential from here til the finale in Abu Dhabi. With that said, let’s move on to our betting pick to win.
F1 Drivers Championship Betting Pick
Look, everyone and their mother has a betting prediction on who’ll take first between Lewis and Max. Heck, we’re about to share ours, but before that, we wanted to highlight one opinion — one that holds a lot of weight.
Ron Dennis was once Hamilton’s boss at McLaren, where he won his first-ever world title. He left the team (and sport) in 2017, but Dennis did chime in on the feud involving his one-time protege. Here’s what he had to say: “I have tremendous respect for the technologists at Red Bull and I think Honda has stabilized their engine performance very well. So I think it’s going to be Verstappen. If it’s not, it will be not because they lack performance but because they make mistakes.”
Dennis’ last line is the key here. The only person that can beat Verstappen is, well, himself. As has been said all year, from Dennis to even Hamilton himself, the Red Bull car is top of its class in 2021. Nothing has or will change in that regard.
But consider the adversity Verstappen has faced thus far: two crashes that led to DNFs, another two crashes which slowed his pace, two grid penalties. It’s been one small catastrophe after another for the soon-to-be 24-year-old (his birthday is September 30) and despite all that, he’s STILL nipping at Hamilton’s heels.
You can probably guess where we’re going here — take Verstappen to defeat Hamilton (ending his four-year reign atop the sport). Unarguably, he’s been the better driver year-round. Unless disaster strikes again — such as a race-ending crash — it’s his championship to lose, which we don’t think he does.
