After Max Verstappen ran away with a victory at the Japan Grand Prix in early October, he’ll be looking to add to his season-long success with another win at the United States Grand Prix. Formula 1 will take a one-week break while the tour moves from Japan to Texas, but it will be all systems go once again on October 23. Red Bull superstar Max Verstappen is heavily favored (-200) heading into the United States Grand Prix, which should come as no surprise. He won in Japan with more than a 27-second gap between himself and the second-place driver, Sergio Perez. Behind Verstappen, Ferarri’s Charles Leclerc comes in with the second-best odds to win at (+350), before a significant dropoff to the third-favorite in Red Bull’s Sergio Perez (+900).
Max Verstappen: the favorite
Max Verstappen is the clear-cut favorite to win this race, and it’s easy to see why. Not only did Verstappen win the 2021 United States Grand Prix at this very race course, but he’s also been on an absolute tear recently within Formula 1. Verstappen has been the outright winner in six of his last seven races, a streak dating all the way back to July 24 when he won the French Grand Prix. He’s since finished first at the Hungarian GP, Belgian GP, Dutch GP, Italian GP, and Japanese GP. The only time he didn’t finish first was in the Singapore GP when Verstappen placed seventh.
It’s been the Verstappen show for the entirety of the Formula 1 season. The Dutchman has 12 victories and 14 podiums this season. His 366 points on the standings tower over the rest of the circuit, and he’s more than 100 points ahead of Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez (253 points) and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc (252 points). No other driver in the circuit has more than three wins or nine podiums, to show just how dominant Verstappen has been.
While (-200) odds for Verstappen to win the race isn’t exactly much bang for your buck, it’s the safest wager to make at the United States Grand Prix, given how dominant Verstappen and Red Bull have been in 2022. If I’m being honest, those odds are pretty generous, too, and it wouldn’t be shocking to see it approach (-250) as the race gets closer.
Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc: the value picks
If taking a (-200) favorite isn’t to your fancy, that’s understandable. If that’s the case, you’ll be rooting for an upset. According to the sportsbooks, Ferrari star Charles Leclerc has the best odds to stun Verstappen and pull off a surprise win in Austin, TX. At (+350) odds, Leclerc would be vying for his fourth victory of the season. He currently ranks second in Formula 1 with three wins, but is third in the standings behind Perez.
Leclerc has been one of the most consistent drivers on the circuit in 2022, and while he only has a few wins to his name this year, it’s been difficult for anyone to take down Verstappen at the top. With nine podiums under his belt, Leclerc is a constant threat to steal a win from out under Verstappen’s nose, and he presents great value for anyone who thinks he’ll be able to grab win No. 4 on the year.
While Lewis Hamilton is no longer the same driver he was during the height of his prime, he’ll be eager to prove he still has what it takes to earn gold in 2022. Winless thus far into the Formula 1 campaign, Hamilton will return to one of the tracks where he’s had the most success throughout his career. Hamilton has six victories at the Circuit of the Americas throughout his career, having won four in a row from 2014-17.
It’s been four years since Hamilton’s last United States Grand Prix victory, and while the course wasn’t raced in 2020, there have been three different winners of the previous three races. With no one emerging as a dominant winner on the track in recent years, Hamilton’s past success and experience of racing on the track could play to his favor. The Mercedes superstar is currently tabbed with (+1200) odds to win the race, which would provide outstanding bang for your buck if the Englishman is able to pull off a victory.
The Pick
As much as I’d love to throw some money at an upset in Austin, I’m operating under the same mindset as the books. Verstappen is just on too much of a tear to bet against right now, so we’re going to go the safe route and rock with the Dutchman. My pick for the race is Max Verstappen to win outright at the 2022 United States Grand Prix at (-200). He’s heavily favored, and for good reason. Betting against him during his dominant stretch is a risk, and we’re going to play it safe with our money in this instance.
