Verstappen aims to repeat in Belgium

Nothing can stop Max Verstappen (+125) in 2022. Even after qualifying a season-worst 10th and spinning out on race day, the Dutchman picked up the 28th victory of his career at the Hungarian Grand Prix last month. With eight wins in 13 races, the reigning world champion is officially on cruise control entering the Belgian GP, where he rode to victory in 2021.

Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc (+350) hopes his Ferrari team can get their shit together after yet another strategic blunder at the Hungaroring. A strange decision to put on hard tires on lap 55 left the Monégasque out of contention in sixth place. With just one win in the past ten races, Leclerc’s dreams of a championship are all but dead.

Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps

The longest track on the Formula One calendar at 4.35 miles, Spa-Francorchamps features a mix of long straights and frighteningly fast corners. Part of F1’s inaugural championship in 1950, Belgium’s iconic circuit in the Ardennes forest is beloved by competitors because they can push their cars to the limit. Especially on the Eau Rouge, one of the most famous corner sequences on earth as drivers bounce left and right before jetting up the hill through Raidillon.

Will Mercedes’ momentum continue?

Lewis Hamilton (+600) is still looking for his first triumph of the 2022 campaign. However, the seven-time world champion has taken five-straight podiums – the longest active streak in F1 – after moving all the way up from seventh to a second-place in Hungary. While Mercedes suffered an ugly start to the season, the Silver Arrows have now placed both of its cars on the podium in consecutive races.

This, of course, spells even more bad news for Leclerc. If Hamilton and teammate George Russell (+1000) come out of the summer break more competitive, they’ll steal points from the Scuderia, making Verstappen’s 80-point cushion even more insurmountable.

Other contenders

Carlos Sainz (+900) and Sergio Perez (+2500) are the only two men other than Verstappen and Leclerc to win a race this year. Mercedes’ reemergence has made each driver’s path to the winner circle a little more challenging, alternating fourth and fifth place finishes in France and Hungary after twin DNFs in Austria.
