Can anyone catch Verstappen?

What started out as a competitive rivalry between Red Bull and Ferrari has turned into a bloodbath. Max Verstappen (-110) has won five of the past six races while Charles Leclerc (+225) has been plagued by poor strategy and reliability issues.

After collecting his 26th career win at the Canadian GP, Verstappen is now viewed as a runaway -600 lock to win the Drivers’ Championship. Meanwhile, Leclerc is at +600 after engine penalties landed him at the back of the grid in Montreal. The Monegasque was able to recover for a fifth-place finish and there are some other signs of hope: he has a fresh power unit, teammate Carlos Sainz (+1200) actually had the quickest car in Montreal, and Leclerc placed second at the British GP last year.

The Silverstone circuit

Silverstone hosted the first-ever Formula 1 World Championship round on May 13, 1950. And the Northamptonshire circuit has always maintained its status as one of the fastest tracks on the F1 calendar.

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner recently opined that the “high-speed” Silverstone “would swing perhaps back towards Ferrari’s domain” while the previous tracks “favoured” Red Bull. He also added that Mercedes could be a factor given the “smooth circuit” at Silverstone.

Lewis Hamilton’s homecoming

Lewis Hamilton (+1600) and George Russell (+1600) placed a respectable third and fourth in Montreal, providing some hope that Mercedes’ porpoising issues are behind them. Incredibly, the seven-time world champion is looking for his ninth-career victory at Silverstone after crossing the finish line first in seven of the past eight British GPs. However, given that he has placed ahead of his teammate Russell only once in eight tries this season, Hamilton is a hard man to bet on.

Given the superior equipment that Ferrari and Red Bull have at their disposal, we prefer backing a No. 2 driver like Sainz (+1200) or Sergio Perez (+900), rather than the two Brits.

Best Bet

While Verstappen (-110) has never won a British GP, he was victorious at Silverstone for a 70th Anniversary GP. And, besides, Team Red Bull has become way too dominant to wager against at this point. Sure, -110 isn’t spectacular value but given that the Dutchman has basically won every race he’s finished this season, getting almost-even odds doesn’t sound too shabby.
