2022 Milan-San Remo Preview
When previewing the 2022 Milan-San Remo, we must state the importance of this race — it’s one of five “monuments of cycling.” All monuments are one-day races (not marathons like the Tour De France, for instance) and have a history dating back to pre-World War I. This is the first monument race of the calendar year and it should be an absolute doozy.
The biggest thing to know about the Milan-San Remo is its sheer length. At 293 kilometers, it’s the longest one-day race of the entire season. The defending champion is Jasper Stuyven of Belgium. It was a career-defining result for Stuyven, who used a wild sprint toward the end to catapult him to victory in 2021. Stuyven crossed the finish line in exhaustive fashion a year ago, an image that’s likely fresh in bettors’ minds as he was an upset winner. This year, despite being the reigning champ, bookies aren’t keen on the Belgian to repeat. His betting odds to win is a long +3300, which is in the middle of the pack.

More than anything else, Pogacar is a great value play at +2500. Value because he’s one of the more accomplished riders expected to compete. Everyone knows about his two Tour de France wins (in 2020 and 2021), but he also has two monument wins to his name. Many thought he’d pass on the Milan-San Remo to prepare for a possible three-peat in France, but the Slovenian has confirmed he’s racing, along with other monuments too. This early in the season, you don’t have to worry about fatigue for Pogacar either, which makes him a good pick here.
Philippe Gilbert
At +7000 to win, the 39-year-old Gilbert is very much a “longshot” to win. So in other words, he’s a bit of a low-risk, high-reward option, but one you should definitely look into. That’s because Gilbert has won ALL the monuments aside from Milan-San Remo. Only three riders in history can claim to have swept the monuments and believe us, Gilbert desperately wants to be number four because he hasn’t been shy about his “striving for five” mantra. It won’t be easy to pull off, but hey, it’s worth a small betting risk because he’ll definitely be one of the most motivated riders in the whole field.
