The biggest racing event of the whole year — La Grande Boucle, as it’s affectionately nicknamed — returns on July 1. Of course, we’re talking about the 2022 Tour de France and we have betting predictions on it right here! While the event is still six months away, it’s never too early to begin the sports betting strategy!

As part of that strategy, we need to see how the best online sportsbooks see the race going. As of this publish time, the betting field is uber-competitive. Here are the current betting favorites to win the 2022 Tour de France:

2022 Tour De France Preview

Back in October, the route for the 109th edition of the famed competition was revealed for the first time. While who and who won’t be racing remains somewhat unknown, there’s enough information available to preview the 2022 Tour de France — and the grueling battle that lays ahead for the betting field.

We could spend the entire article detailing each of the 21 stages, but that would also be information overload. As a bettor, taking a macro view of the entire event might serve you better off. In that respect, it appears to be a well-balanced race.

For one, there are 53 kilometers of time trails bookending the race route. There will be a heavy dose of mountains, too. Races will run through the Vosges, the Alps, and the Pyrenees — which should help climbers attack and gain time. Then there’s the exposed roads of Denmark and northern France and the cobbled stage to Wallers-Arenberg, which rounds out the racing experience.

The big takeaway you should have as a bettor? The running of the Tour de France doesn’t favor any “type” of rider. No, the 2022 stage is tailor-made for a complete rider that can do it all — whether that’s on the echelons or on the pave.

A few other things to note about the looming event. It will start in Copenhagen (where it should’ve last year but didn’t due to scheduling conflicts with the European Cup Championship). The 2022 stage will cover 19.4 kilometers of cobblestones — five of which have never been used in the Tour de France. As usual, the finale will be in Paris on Sunday, July 24. This is also the day you can cash out your futures bet (if you’ve won). Speaking of which, let’s talk about which riders give you the best opportunity to cash out come late July:

2022 Tour De France Betting Picks

We’re going to be making multiple 2022 Tour de France picks here — you almost have to in these grueling events. As a cyclist in a three-week race, you’re always one injury away from falling out of contention (and bringing down your bettors in the process). With that out of the way, here are the two riders we’re backing to win in this crowded field:

Tadej Pogacar

This one’s a no-brainer, isn’t it? Here we have the two-time reigning champion who is only 23 years old. Our betting confidence in Pogacar comes from not just him winning back-to-back years, but how he did so. In 2020, Pogacar narrowly took the yellow jacket. But in 2021, Pogacar won with ease — showing huge year-to-year improvements with the result.

While many other riders haven’t fully committed to the Tour de France, the defending champion has made it clear he’s “all in” on a potential three-peat. The Slovenian confirmed he’s racing in France and the Vuelta de Espana too — the first time he’s embarked on two Grand Tours in a single season. That Spain race is after France so no need to worry about fatigue. Until he’s beaten, you almost have to bet on Pogacar here.

Egan Bernal

Alright, since Pogacar is a “safe” bet, we wanted to be riskier with our second choice. Right now, the 2019 Tour de France champion, Bernal, certainly falls into that category. Just days ago, Bernal struck a stopped bus while biking. The scary incident landed him in the intensive care unit and required multiple “small” surgeries. All things considered, it could’ve been far worse for the Columbian cyclist. Cause of the accident, Bernal’s winning odds at the Tour de France dropped across bookmakers.

Earlier we said to bet Pogacar until he’s beaten — but the same applies to Bernal. After winning the Tour de France in 2019, he hasn’t quite been “beaten” for the title. In 2020, he was hampered with injuries and took a DNF. Then last year, Bernal skipped France in favor of Giro d’Italia. We believe the former champion is more than worth a flyer bet at his +1400 price — assuming he can recover from the crash and commits to France, of course.
