Updated Heisman Trophy Odds After The Spring Games

  • Bovada has updated its 2019 Heisman Trophy odds after college football’s Spring Games
  • Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence (+250) and Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa (+250) remain heavy favorites for the award
  • Ohio State’s Justin Fields (+1100) and Oklahoma’s Jalen Hurts (+1300) are attractive dark horses

The Heisman Trophy is awarded to the best player in college football … as long as that player is a quarterback. Since the magical decade that was the 1990s (which brought us six non-QB Heisman winners, dial-up Internet, and Melrose Place), only three non-QBs have struck the Heisman pose: Reggie Bush (RB, USC, since vacated), Mark Ingram (RB, Alabama), and Derrick Henry (RB, Alabama).

That essentially gives us license to ignore every running back and wide receiver on the Bovada list below.

Instead, let’s analyze the top quarterbacks’ Spring Game performances and see if any value bets stand out.

The Favorites: Trevor Lawrence (+250) and Tua Tagovailoa (+250)

Just as Alabama and Clemson are heavily favored to win next year’s CFP National Championship, their young signal callers lead the pack of Heisman contenders. Both ineligible for this year’s NFL Draft, many experts already believe Tua Tagovailoa and Trevor Lawrence will be the number-one overall picks in 2020 and 2021.

Strangely enough, both quarterbacks underperformed in their Spring Game starts. After connecting on 19 of 37 passes for 265 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT, Tagovailoa attributed his struggles to a vanilla offense and Alabama’s defensive staff knowing the playbook.

Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence completed 19 of 34 passes for 232 yards and a TD, and was apparently frustrated during a 30-10 Spring Game loss.

It’s probably best not to pay much attention to either result. While both guys seem poised for stardom, the Tigers’ high-powered offense makes Fabio’s lovechild the better bet. Lawrence will always have the green light to attack from Clemson coach Dabo Swinney, while Alabama’s Nick Saban will be content to run the ball and win with defense.

Terrific Transfers: Justin Fields (+1100) and Jalen Hurts (+1300)

The recent Spring Games served as a showcase for both star transfers. After running away from the Crimson Tide, QB Jalen Hurts ran for a TD in his Sooners debut while passing for 174 yards and a score.

Justin Fields also showed off his impressive dual-threat ability to Buckeyes fans, scampering for a 38-yard score and tossing a 98-yard TD bomb.

Hurts is an attractive bet because Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley also happened to call plays for the past two Heisman Trophy-winners, Baker Mayfield (2017) and Kyler Murray (2018). While it’s possible voters won’t want to award a Sooners QB for a third straight year, Hurts has a chance if he can boost his completion percentage and efficiency under the QB whisperer.

Similarly, Fields can lean on the offensive mind of new head coach Ryan Day, who will continue to modernize the Ohio State attack after taking over for Urban Meyer. Loaded with five-star talent, the Buckeyes will put up points and win a lot of games.
