NFL Week 4 Preview & Odds: Eagles vs. 49ers

Although the San Francisco 49ers are off to an unexpected 1-2 start, it’s still too early in the season to call any game a must-win situation.  With that said, Sunday’s game against the undefeated Philadelphia Eagles (4:25 p.m. Eastern on FOX) is important because the 49ers don’t want to be looking at 1-3.

In their two losses, the 49ers gave up second-half leads to the Chicago Bears and Arizona Cardinals.  Moreover, they haven’t yet scored in the fourth quarter this season.  But things aren’t so gloomy, especially considering the team’s 1-2 start just last season.

“We’ve been in this position before where there is an ebb and a flow to the season.  We’re in it now,” said coach Jim Harbaugh.  “That’s the great challenge for our football team and I have great confidence that we’ll attack it.”

Limiting turnovers and establishing the ground game are two important keys for San Francisco.

The Philadelphia Eagles meanwhile, have to be happy about their 3-0 start.  Of course, they’d like to start games better and not have to overcome deficits, but they’ll take wins any way they can get them.

“We stick together and there’s a great camaraderie,” said quarterback Nick Foles of the adversity the team faces during games.

The Eagles would love to get LeSean McCoy going.  The star running back is averaging just 2.9 yards a carry this season on 60 carries.  That won’t be good enough for the Eagles to sustain their early-season success.

Philadelphia’s defense, which is giving up 26 points per game, also needs to be better.  Most of those points have come in the first half of games, so a good early start will be incumbent upon improvement from the defense.

The 49ers are currently a 3.5-point favorite for Sunday’s game.  The over/under stands at 51.
