Held every other year since 1979, until it became an annual event in 1992, the World Squash Championships are the pinnacle of competition in the sport of squash. Organized by the Professional Squash Association, the PSA World Championships are an excellent showcase of the very best in what the sport has to offer. In this past year’s edition, held from July 14-22 in Chicago, Ill., Egypt’s Nour El Sherbini was able to secure her fifth world title.

In 2015, she became the youngest woman to win the Women’s World Championship. Known as “The Warrior Princess,” the 26-year old from Egypt already has five world titles to her name and is currently ranked as the No. 1 player in the world. Along with her success at the World Championships, El Sherbini has won three gold medals at the World Team Championships. Second only to the legendary Nicol David in all-time titles (8), El Sherbini has an opportunity to make more history in 2022 if she keeps up this hellacious pace.

Winner of the 2021 Women’s PSA World Tour Finals in Cairo, Gohar is a former No. 1 player looking to unseat El Sherbini. A fellow Egyptian, Gohar is recognized as the No. 2 player in the world and boasts three bronze medals at the World Championships (2015, 2016, and 2019). A powerhouse in her own right, the 24-year old has risen to prominence since winning the prestigious British Junior Open three times (2012, 2015 and 2016). For her to finally defeat El Sherbini, she will have to continue pushing the pace with her rival. Could this finally be the year that she wins it all? She has the momentum and track record to do so.
Number three: Camille Serme (TBA)
One of the few players in the world who have beaten El Sherbini in a major competition (the 2016 U.S. Open and the 2020 J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions), Serme is the savvy veteran of this countdown. A bronze medalist at four World Championships, the native of Créteil, France has had a lot of success over the course of her career. Since turning pro in 2005, she has won 13 titles and been in 23 Tour Finals, which also includes a gold medal at the 2017 World Games in Wroclaw. If she is able to pull off the victory at the upcoming World Championships, she would be the first French woman to have won a world title.
Final contender: Amanda Sobhy (TBA)
The highest ranking US-born player in the history of the PSA world rankings, Sobhy has a career-high world ranking of No. 3, which she achieved in October of this year. In her career representing the United States, Sobhy has locked down 18 titles which also includes three gold medals at the Pan American Games (Singles/2015, Doubles/2015, and Team/2015). The runner-up to El Sherbini in the 2016 Tournament of Champions, the American has her work cut out for her if she wants to make that final push to No. 1 in the world rankings.
Prediction: Though there will certainly be many intriguing storylines leading into the 2022 World Championships, the reign of The Warrior Princess will be the one that trumps them all. El Sherbini is on a path to becoming the best of all time and does not seem to be slowing down anytime soon.
