The Number One Contender: Indonesia (Odds: TBA)

Indonesia is the most successful country in the history of the Thomas Cup (they have never missed a competition since they started in 1958) and for good reason. The Indonesian team first won the competition back in 1958 and have participated a total of 28 times, winning the competition an astonishing half of the time. In the history of the team at the event, Indonesia has played in the final tie on 19 different occasions and have never failed to place among the top four teams in the competition, except back in 2012. While Indonesia has enjoyed their return to prominence they will have to deal with China who had won three Thomas Cups in the 2010’s.

Number Two: China (Odds: TBA)

Since the 2000’s, China has won more Thomas Cups than any other nation at six total championships. With their last title coming back in 2018, the Chinese have an extra edge to them to unseat Indonesia at the top of the men’s badminton mountain. China finished as the runner-ups in the 2020 tournament, but were blanked 3-0 in the final against Indonesia. While they did not get the result they wanted at the 2020 championship, they did still finish the tournament with the best goal differential at +290. China is also coming off a gold medal finish at the 2021 Sudirman Cup (mixed team tournament) which might give them a competitive boost in 2022.

Number three: Denmark (Odds: TBA)

Recognized as Europe’s most potent force in men’s badminton, Denmark is the only non-Asian country to have won the Thomas Cup. Denmark’s lone victory in the competition actually came back in 2016, the Danes have finished as runner-ups eight times in the tournament. Since that first place finish, Denmark has finished in third place at the prior two Thomas Cups. This has been their most consistent run of medal success at the tournament since the mid-1990’s to early 2000’s when they finished on the podium at six straight competitions.

Final contender: Japan (Odds: TBA)

While Japan did not end up as champions at the 2020 tournament, they still are a team that should not be taken lightly for the 2022 edition. Japan finished tied for third place at the 2020 Thomas Cup with Denmark. The Japanese won the 2014 edition of the tournament, winning the gold medal in the country’s first ever appearance in the championship round of the tournament. Prior to that victory, Japan had only finished in the top four of the tournament on four prior occasions: 1967, 1979, 2010, and 2012. So while they had a minor setback in 2020, the Japanese have steadily staked their claim as a consistent badminton power.

Prediction: In a year where perhaps anything is possible, a familiar face will regain the throne at the top of the men’s badminton mountain. With perhaps the most resources and high-flying athletes in the sport, China will regain their crown in 2022 at the Thomas Cup.
