Odds to Win 2021 Men's BWF World Championship | |
Tai Tzu-ying | TBA |
Akane Yamaguchi | TBA |
Nozomi Okuhara | TBA |
Carolina Marín | TBA |
The Number One Seed: Tai Tzu-ying (Odds: TBA)
Ranked as the No. 1 player in the world, Tzu-ying has had a remarkable career thus far. Tzu-ying is coming off a silver medal performance at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and has dominated the Asian Championships with three gold medal performances in 2018, 2017 and 2015. She initially became the No. 1 player in the world at the age of 22 in December of 2016. The following year, she would win the gold medal at the 2017 Summer Universiade. Recently, she was named the BWF Player of the Year for 2020-21. With many calling her playing style spontaneous and unpredictable, she is truly an athlete you can never take your eyes off.
Number Two: Akane Yamaguchi (TBA)
One of the most talented players in the field, Yamaguchi has a very swift and diligent playing style that makes her performances a consistent display of dexterity. With her quick and nimble footwork, Yamaguchi is able to overcome her size disadvantage by overwhelming her opponents with expertly placed shots on a consistent basis. In the past, she has claimed titles at the World Junior Championships (2013-14) to the Asian Championships (2019). While she has never won a world title before, the closest she has come was a bronze medal in 2018, she is still a crafty competitor with a hunger for her first gold medal. A former world No. 1 competitor, Yamaguchi will be looking to get back to her consistent winning ways later this month.
Number three: Nozomi Okuhara (TBA)
The 2017 World Champion, Okuhara is another former world No. 1 player in the BWF rankings going for the gold medal. Earlier this year, Okuhara won her second England Open title (her first was in 2016) by knocking off Pornpawee Chochuwong in two games. She also has a silver medal to her name from the 2019 World Championships and is looking to regain her crown from 2017. She does have her work cut out for her though when compared to the other players on this list. She has a losing record against Tzu-ying (6-7) and Carolina Marín (8-9), but does have a winning mark against Yamaguchi (11-8).
Final contender: Carolina Marín (TBA)
Our last challenger on this list needs no introduction to badminton enthusiasts. A former Olympic Champion, three-time World Champion, and five-time European Champion, Marín is one of the most dominant players in the history of the sport. Through the process of locking down three women’s singles titles in 2014, 2015 and 2018, she became the first female badminton athlete to have ever pulled off this feat. Though she has cooled just a bit in the years since she became the world No. 1 player, the Spaniard is certainly one of the most exciting players not only on tour now, but in the history of the sport. While she was unable to defend her Olympic crown at the 2020 Tokyo Games due to a knee injury, she should be ready to go for the World Championships.

Prediction: With Marín being slowed down by a lower body injury, her quest to a fourth world title might not come to fruition in 2021. In the interim, look for Yamaguchi to lock down her first world championship. She has the resume as a former No. 1 ranked player and has the opportunity to make her own history later this month.
