Norway

No team has succeeded in European Women’s Handball like the squad from Norway. The country has won the European title eight times dating back to 1998. Since 2004, Norway has won all but two titles, 2012 (Montenegro) and 2018 (France). In addition to eight titles, Norway has three silver medals and one bronze. With 12 medals, Norway is the only country with more than five medals in women’s competition. Denmark and France, who both have five total medals, are Norway’s closest rivals in the overall medal count.

The reigning champs, Norway finished with a bronze medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.  Norway is also the reigning world champion in women’s handball, beating France 29-22.

France

2022 could be a breakthrough year for France’s women’s handball team when it comes to the European Handball Championship. The French squad finished in third in the European Handball Championship in 2016, won the title in 2018 and was runner-up to Norway in 2020. The French team won gold in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and defeated Norway in the 2021 World Championship.

While France is not the favorite to win the gold, the team should not be overlooked and they have an excellent chance to add to their all-time medal count this year. The team has one gold, one silver and three bronze medals in the history of the Women’s European Handball Championship.

Denmark

While Norway has been the dominant force in European Women’s Handball, Denmark has also found success. The second-winningest squad in the history of the European Championship, Denmark has three gold medal performances. The most recent of those top finishes came in 2002.

Denmark took fourth in 2020, losing to Croatia 25-19. The club finished in third place during the 2021 World Championship. Denmark might not have the momentum of Norway or France, but they should not be overlooked in 2022.

Our pick

Norway has dominated women’s handball for a long while. A lot of that success has to do with the play of Nora Mørk, who has been with the national team since 2010. During that time, she has won four gold medals in the European Championship as well as leading the tournament in scoring in 2016 (53 goals) and 2020 (52 goals). Mark will be a part of the 2022 team. She is eighth all-time in team scoring with 761 goals and she should be able to add to that number this year.

The experienced and successful team from Norway is the best bet to win the 2022 EHF Women’s European Handball Championship.
