One of the most dominant squads in the history of handball, FC Barcelona currently boasts a record 10 EHF Champions League Trophies. With their most recent title coming last season, Barcelona has the firepower to hang with any squad in the HF. During the 2019-20 postseason, Barcelona was able to knock off both HBC Nantes (31-26) and Aalborg (36-23) en route to the 2021 European title. One player to watch is the goalkeeper captain, Gonzalo Pérez de Vargas, who is coming off helping Spain to a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Games. Currently, Barcelona sits in fourth place in Group B.
Number Two: Kiel (+600)
A known powerhouse, THW Kiel has gotten off to a slow start this year, with a 1-3 record over halfway through December. While this was not the ideal start for the German handball club, they are still a force to be reckoned with. The winners of the 2020 EHF Champions League title, Kiel is one of the historic powers of the EHF. The club is led by centre back Domagoj Duvnjak who is one of the most decorated players in the sport and a former IHF World Player of the Year. Even with a rough start to the season, it will be hard to count out the back-to-back Handball-Bundesliga champions from the EHF title.
Number three: Aalborg (+700)
A Danish superpower, Aalborg Handball is a dynamic squad from Denmark. The only Nordic men’s team to reach the final in the EHF Champions League, Aalborg is off to a hot start in Group A with a 7-0-3 record, good for second place overall. The squad is coming off of their sixth overall title in the Danish Handball League and are the current reigning back-to-back champions for the Danish Handball Cup and Danish Super Cup as well. While they have yet to win an EHF Champions League title, they are coming off a silver medal performance in 2021. Could this be the season they break through?
Dark horse contender: Paris Saint-Germain (+800)
Another strong domestic superpower, Paris Saint-Germain were the third place honorees in the 2019-20 and 2020-21 EHF seasons. The current No. 2 team in Group B with a record of 5-2-3, PSG currently paces their group with a +36 goal differential. The squad has dominated the French handball scene in LNH Division 1 with seven consecutive LNH titles dating back to the 2014-15 season. PSG is another club seeking their first ever EHF title in 2022.
Prediction: Perhaps more so than in other seasons, this field feels remarkably wide open and especially tough to pin down the new EHF Champions League title holder.
