The ninth staging of the PDC World Series of Darts begins on January 12, 2023, when 16 of the top darts players in the world travel to Sakhir, Bahrain, for the 2023 Bahrain Darts Masters event. The World Series of Darts consists of five tournaments and one finals event, which takes place in Amsterdam in September.
The prize money for each of the five international events is £60,000 in total. The winner of each event takes home £20,000, while the runner-up pockets £10,000. Players eliminated in the semi-finals make £5,000 and those who lose in the quarter-finals pocket £2,500. Players who fail to move past the first round of each event earn £1,250.
The winner of the 2022 World Series of Darts Finals was Gerwyn Price, who is back to defend his title. Also in the mix is Michael Smith, who recently won the PDC World Championship for the first time. Smith was the runner-up to James Wade in the 2018 World Series of Darts Finals.

Michael Smith
Michael Smith surged to the No. 1 spot in the PDC rankings following his win over three-time world champion Michael van Gerwen at the 2023 World Championship event. The victory was the first time the 32-year-old player from England claimed the world title. Smith will be eager to follow that triumph with a solid performance in the opening event of the 2023 World Series of Darts.
Smith won the first 2022 World Series of Darts event, beating Michael van Gerwen at the US Darts Masters in June 2022. However, he did not finish in the top two in any of the other 2022 World Series tournaments.
Smith’s first win in a ranked event before winning the 2023 World Championship came at the 2022 World Series of Darts.
Gerwyn Price
Gerwyn Price has won the World Series of Darts Finals twice during his career, in 2020 and 2022. He is currently the No. 4 ranked darts player in the world.
Price was the No. 1 ranked player heading into the recently completed 2023 World Championship tournament. The 37-year-old Welsh player had a good showing in that event, but Gabriel Clemens eliminated him in the quarter-final round. Clemens fell to Smith in the semi-finals.
Besides winning the World Series of Darts Finals last year, Price placed first at the New Zealand Darts Masters and was runner-up to Michael van Gerwen at the Queensland Darts Masters.
Price did not win a ranked event in 2022, but he finished as the runner-up to Van Gerwen at the World Matchplay event in July.
Jonny Clayton
Jonny Clayton won the 2021 World Series of Darts Finals. In 2022, Dirk van Duijvenbode eliminated him in the semi-final round of the event. The 48-year-old Clayton took first at the New South Wales Darts Masters during the 2022 World Series of Darts run. He also finished as the runner-up to Gerwyn Price at the New Zealand Darts Masters. Clayton enters the 2023 Bahrain Darts Masters as the No. 7 ranked player in the world.
Clayton did not win an event in 2022, which had to be a disappointment for him after he won one ranked event and three non-ranked events in 2021.
At the recent World Championship, Dimitri Van den Bergh eliminated Clayton in the quarter-final round. That finish was the highest Clayton had placed in his career in that event.

Smith is the favorite here because of his win over Van Gerwen at the 2023 World Championship. However, I don’t think he will win back-to-back events. The best bet for the 2023 Bahrain Darts Masters is to pick the defending World Series of Darts Finals champion, Gerwyn Price.
