Michael Smith is having a great start to 2023. On January 3, the 32-year-old took home his first PDC World Darts Championship title, beating the No. 3 ranked player in the world, Michael van Gerwen in the finals. Smith followed that with a win in the first event of the 2023 World Series of Darts, the Bahrain Masters, on January 13. Smith, who has rocketed to the No. 1 spot in the PDC rankings, defeated Gerwyn Price in the finals of that event. Van Gerwen missed the Bahrain Masters because of family reasons.
The second event of the 2023 World Series of Darts, the Nordic Darts Masters, goes down on January 20-21 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The event features 16 of the top players in darts. The seedings are based on their 2023 World Series rankings after the first event.
With the seeding of the event, the No. 1 seed, Smith, could face the No. 8 seed Van Gerwen in the semi-finals.

Michael Smith
Michael Smith surged to the No. 1 spot in the PDC rankings following his win over three-time world champion Michael van Gerwen at the 2023 World Championship event. The victory was the first time the 32-year-old player from England claimed the world title. Smith, who won the opening event of the 2022 World Series of Darts season, followed his World Championship victory with a win at the first event of the 2023 World Series of Darts, the Bahrain Masters.
Smith made it to the semi-finals of the 2022 Nordic Masters. Eventual winner, Dimitri Van den Bergh eliminated him in that round.
If there is a player who is surging with confidence right now, it’s Smith.
Michael van Gerwen
Michael van Gerwen has something to prove. He finished as the runner-up to Smith at the World Championship and that sat out the Bahrain Masters only to see Smith win a second straight event. The 33-year-old Van Gerwen exited the 2022 Nordic Masters in the quarter-finals after James Wade eliminated him. Van Gerwen won one event during the 2022 World Series of Darts run, placing first at the Queensland Darts Masters event.
Van Gerwen finished 2022 with three wins in ranking events.
Gerwyn Price
The 37-year-old Gerwyn Price enters the Nordic Darts Masters as the No. 4 ranked player in the world. Price has won the World Series of Darts Finals twice during his career, in 2020 and 2022. He was the runner-up to Smith at the Bahrain Masters.
Price, who was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the 2022 Nordic Darts Masters by the eventual winner, Dimitri Van den Bergh. In addition to claiming victory at the 2022 World Series of Darts Finals, Price won the 2022 New Zealand Darts Masters and finished as the runner-up to Van Gerwen at the Queensland Darts Masters.
Jonny Clayton
Jonny Clayton won the 2021 World Series of Darts Finals. In 2022, Dirk van Duijvenbode eliminated him in the semi-final round of the event. The 48-year-old Clayton took first at the New South Wales Darts Masters during the 2022 World Series of Darts run. He also finished as the runner-up to Gerwyn Price at the New Zealand Darts Masters. Clayton enters the 2023 Dutch Darts Masters as the No. 7 ranked player in the world.
Clayton did not win an event in 2022, which had to be a disappointment for him after he won one ranked event and three non-ranked events in 2021.
At the recent World Championship, Dimitri Van den Bergh eliminated Clayton in the quarter-final round. That finish was the highest Clayton had placed in his career in that event.
