Michael van Gerwen
The 33-year-old Michael van Gerwen is a three-time PDC World Champion, holding the title in 2014, 2017 and 2019. He was the world’s No. 1 ranked player from 2014 through 2021. Van Gerwen’s current ranking is No. 3 in the world, behind No. 1 ranked Peter Wright and the No. 2 ranked Gerwyn Price.
Van Gerwen is coming off a win in the 2022 World Grand Prix. He defeated Nathan Aspinall in the final of that tournament, which wrapped up in early October. Van Gerwen topped Wright in the semi-finals of the event. The win was his sixth World Grand Prix title, with his most recent triumph coming in 2019.
Van Gerwen has four European Championship titles to his name, winning the event in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017.
Gerwyn Price
Gerwyn Price was the No. 1 ranked player in the world heading into the World Grand Prix. One of the co-favorites to win that event along with Van Gerwen, Price made it to the final four before losing to Aspinall in the semi-final round. With that finish, he dropped to No. 2 in the rankings.
Price has had success in 2022, most recently winning the World Series Final in mid-September.
The 27-year-old has never won the European Championship. He finished as runner-up to Rob Cross in 2019. Last year, Van Gerwen eliminated Price in the quarter-finals.
Peter Wright
In January, Peter Wright took home £500,000 when he claimed his second PDC World Darts Championship. Wright made it to the second round of the recent World Series of Darts. Like Price, Wright made it to the semi-final round of the 2022 World Grand Prix. Van Gerwen eliminated him in that tournament.
The No. 1 player in the world, the 52-year-old Wright has one European Championship to his name. He won the event in 2020. Wright was upset in the first round of the 2021 European Championship, bowing out to Florian Hempel, who lost in the following round of the event.
Wright is the oldest player to hold the No. 1 ranking.
Rob Cross
The defending European Champion, Rob Cross is the No. 8 ranked player in the world. Cross did not have a good World Grand Prix in 2022. He was eliminated in the first round of that event by the unranked Daryl Gurney. Cross’ most recent win was his victory at the Players Championship 24 in August.
Our pick
Looking at the bracket for this event, Michael van Gerwen, Gerwyn Price, and Peter Wright are all in the same half of the bracket, which makes things very interesting. Wright and Price could meet in the second round if they both win their first matches. Van Gerwen would not face either of them until the semi-final round.
I think the best bet to win the 2022 European Darts Championship is Michael van Gerwen. He has momentum coming off his win at the 2022 World Grand Prix.
Pick: Michael van Gerwen to win the 2022 Cazoo European Darts Championship Tournament.
