Michael van Gerwen
Michael van Gerwen is currently the No. 3 ranked player in the world. Van Gerwen had an outstanding year in 2022, winning three-ranked televised events and one non-ranked event. He then opened 2023 with a runner-up finish to Michael Smith in the PDC World Championship. He beat Smith in Night One of the Premier League, but he could not ride the momentum of that victory to a win in the Finals, where he fell to Chris Dobey. Van Gerwen made it to the semi-finals of Night Two, but lost to Gerwyn Price by a score of 6-5. Van Gerwen, who was the favorite in Night Three, fell in the first round to Tom Aspinall.
Van Gerwen faces Chris Dobey in the opening round of Night Four. Dobey has not made it past the quarter-final round since his win on Night One of the 2023 Premier League.
Michael Smith
The No. 1 player in the world, Michael Smith, had possibly the toughest draw of Night One when he matched up against Michael van Gerwen in the Quarter-Finals. Van Gerwen triumphed in that game, beating Smith 6-3 and then moving on to the Finals, where he fell to Chris Dobey. On Night Two, Smith got past his first-round opponent, Jonny Clayton, but he dropped his semi-final matchup against Nathan Aspinall by a score of 6-4. On Night Three, Smith dispatched Gerwyn Price in the opening round before going on to win the Final.
Smith has been one of the most consistent players since winning the PDC World Championship. He faces Peter Wright in the opening round of Night Four.
Gerwyn Price
Gerwyn Price did not have a good Night One of the 2023 Premier League. The veteran player lost to Nathan Aspinall by a score of 6-4 in the opening round. Last week, Price, who is the No. 4 ranked darts player in the world, bounced back from that performance by winning Night Two of the Premier League. Any momentum Price had from his win on Night Two went by the wayside last week when Michael Smith eliminated him in the opening round.
Consistency has been a problem for Price, who has a tough draw in the opening round of this week’s event against Dimitri Van den Bergh.
