Michael van Gerwen

Michael van Gerwen finished as the runner-up to Smith at the World Championship and sat out the Bahrain Masters only to see Smith win a second straight event. The 33-year-old Van Gerwen then watched Smith move one round deeper than him in the Nordic Masters. Wright eliminated Van Gerwen in the quarter-finals of that event, beating him 10-9.

Van Gerwen is one of the best players in the history of The Masters. He won the event in five straight years between 2015 and 2019. Last year, Cullen eliminated Van Gerwen in the quarter-finals. He enters the 2023 Masters as the PDC No. 3 player in the world.

Van Gerwen gets a bye in the first round of the 2023 Masters. He faces the winner of the matchup between Jose de Sousa and Gabriel Clemens. Van Gerwen is in the same bracket as Peter Wright, Jonny Clayton and Rob Cross.

Peter Wright

Peter Wright defied the odds at the 2023 Nordic Masters. The 52-year-old was listed as +1200 to win the event. He defeated Michael Van Gerwen, Michael Smith and Gerwyn Price on his way to that win. Each of those men were given better odds to win the Nordic Masters than Wright.

The No. 2 PDC player in the world, Wright has momentum heading into this event. Wright has one previous win at The Masters. He took home the title in 2020, defeating Michael Smith 11-10. Besides that win, Wright has made the semi-finals at the Masters twice.

Wright’s most recent win before the Nordic Dart Masters, was his victory at the 2022 PDC World Championships in January 2022.

Wright has a bye in the first round of the 2023 Masters. He is in the bracket with Jonny Clayton, Van Gerwen and Rob Cross.

Our pick

The darts world could get a rematch between Michael Smith and Michael van Gerwen. If that happens, it will occur in the final round of the 2023 Cazoo Masters and it will put a spotlight on the sport because of their entertaining final round at the 2023 PDC World Championships.

There is a good chance of that happening, but whatever the outcome of the early rounds of the 2023 Masters, the best bet is to pick Van Gerwen to win.

Pick: Michael van Gerwen to win the 2023 Cazoo Masters.
