With the 2023 Snooker World Grand Prix behind us, the next ranking event of the 2022-23 snooker season is the 2023 German Masters. The snooker tournament takes place between February 1-5 at the Tempodrom in Berlin, Germany. The winner of the 2022 German Masters was Zhao Xintong, who beat out Yan Bingtao in the finals. Zhao is not on the roster of players for the 2023 German Masters. The World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association has suspended Zhao while it investigates match fixing allegations against the player. Yan is also missing from the 2023 German Masters for the same reason.
The qualifying rounds for the 2023 German Masters took place in November 2022, during that stage of the event, some of the top players in the world were knocked out of the competition. Those players included top-10 players Judd Trump, Mark Allen, Mark Selby, John Higgins and Mark Williams. The No. 1 ranked player in the world, Ronnie O’Sullivan, withdrew from the event before the qualifying rounds.
Only six of the top-ranked snooker players in the world made it out of the qualifying rounds: Luca Brecel, Jack Lisowski, Neil Robertson, Kyren Wilson, Yan Bingtao, and Zhao Xintong. As stated above, Zhao and Yan have been removed from the event.

Neil Robertson
Neil Robertson is the highest-ranked player on the World Snooker Tour (WST) competing at the 2023 German Masters. Robertson is the No. 5 ranked player in the world. Robertson has played well in 2022-23, but he has yet to win an event this season. The 40-year-old Australian, who claimed the world championship in 2010, has made it to the semi-final round in four events this year, but he has yet to make a final table. Robertson has also been eliminated in the first round in four other 2022-23 events, including The Masters, where Shaun Murphy defeated him.
Robertson has never won the German Masters. In 2022, Ricky Walden beat him in the round of 32. Robertson starts the 2023 German Masters against Joe Perry, who is the No. 29 ranked player in the world. Robertson and the No. 21 ranked Walden are in the same bracket and could rematch in the semi-finals.
Jack Lisowski
The No. 12 ranked player on the WST, Jack Lisowski, is still searching for the first tournament win of his career. The 31-year-old has not made the finals of an event since the 2020-21 season, when he did so three times. Lisowski has made the semi-finals twice in 2022-23, including at The Masters, where he lost 6-0 to Mark Williams.
Lisowski lost in the qualifying round of the 2022 German Masters. The 2021 version of the event was one where he made the final table. Judd Trump defeated him that night 9-2.
Kyren Wilson
Kyren Wilson enters the 2023 German Masters as the No. 8 ranked WST player. Wilson did not make the finals of an event on 2021-22, but he has a win at the European Masters in the 2022-23 WST season. The 31-year-old defeated Barry Hawkins in that tournament.
Unlike Robertson and Lisowski, Wilson has a win at the German Masters. He won the event in 2019, beating David Gilbert in the finals.
Outside of his win at the European Masters, Wilson has only made it as far as the quarter-finals in one event this season, the Scottish Open, where Gary Wilson beat him. Wilson is coming off first-round eliminations in the Shoot Out and The Masters ahead of the 2023 German Masters.
Best bet to win the 2023 German Masters
Neil Robertson has had an up-and-down year in 2022-23, but with some of the top players out of this event, the 2023 German Masters could be his best chance to end his run of going without a WST victory.
