Neil Robertson
The 2010 World Champion and defending English Open champ, Neil Robertson, made his 2022-23 season debut at the Hong Kong Masters.
Robertson, who is the No. 4 player in the world, has played in five events this year. In three, the Northern Ireland Open, the Hong Kong Masters and Scottish Open, he’s made it to the semi-final round. In the others, the UK Championship and Champion of Champions, he was eliminated in the first round.
Coming off his deep run in the Scottish Open, the 40-year-old Australian seems due to win soon. Robertson picked up four victories last year. His first ranking tournament win came in this event. Robertson also made the finals of the 2020 English Open, losing to Judd Trump.
Ronnie O’Sullivan
Always a threat to win any tournament he competes in, the reigning World Champion, Ronnie O’Sullivan, has yet to have a deep run in a ranking tournament during the 2022-23 snooker season. O’Sullivan’s deepest run came in the UK Championship, where he was eliminated in the quarter-finals by Ding Junhui. O’Sullivan fell in the second round of the Scottish Open when he lost to Gary Wilson. Despite not winning a ranking event, O’Sullivan has two wins in non-ranking tournaments. The world’s No. 1 ranked player, O’Sullivan, has 2022 wins at the Hong Kong Masters and Champion of Champions events.
The 47-year-old made it to the semi-final of the 2021 English Open before losing to John Higgins. O’Sullivan has one English Open win. That came in 2017.
Judd Trump
The No. 2 player in the world, Judd Trump has not won an event this year. He came close, finishing as a runner-up in The Champion of Champions, where he lost to O’Sullivan, but outside of that has not gotten past the quarter-finals in any other event during the 2022-23 season. One of the two events Trump made it to the quarter-final round was the Scottish Open, where he lost to Thepchaiya Un-Nooh, who had an incredible run in defeating Mark Allen, Jamie Jones and Trump before losing to Gary Wilson in the semi-final round.
The 33-year-old Trump has a win in the English Open, capturing the title in 2020. Last year, Trump lost in the quarter-final round to Mark King.
Our pick
Neil Robertson’s more relaxed approach to Snooker events has not earned him a win in 2022, but he has come so very close to making the final round that it seems inevitable that he will have a breakthrough moment sooner rather than later. With the fact that he finished as the runner-up in the 2020 English Open and won the event in 2021, the best bet to win the English Open in 2022 is Neil Robertson.
Pick: Neil Robertson to win the 2022 English Open.
