The Hong Kong Masters Invitational Snooker Tournament returns in 2022. The non-ranking event was last played in 2017. The top two players in that year’s edition of the tourney, Neil Robertson and Ronnie O’Sullivan, are back for this year’s lineup. The two veterans are the favorites in 2022.
Joining Robertson and O’Sullivan in 2022 are other top snooker players Judd Trump, Mark Selby, John Higgins, Zhao Xintong, Marco Fu and Ng On Yee.
The Hong Kong Masters comes on the heels of the 2022 British Open. Mark Allen won the 2022 open. Of the players competing in Hong Kong, Mark Selby had the deepest run in the British Open. Selby made it to the semi-final round before losing 5-3 to Allen.
The winner of the Hong Kong Masters takes home £100,000, which is the same prize money offered in the 128-player British Open.

Ronnie O’Sullivan
The No. 1 ranked snooker player in the world, Ronnie O’Sullivan is struggling to find his footing in the 2022-23 season. The 46-year-old finished 2022 by winning his seventh World Championship, but has yet to make a mark in 2022-23.
He was eliminated in the second round of the Championship League tournament in late July. O’Sullivan withdrew from the season’s second event, the European Masters for medical reasons. O’Sullivan was eliminated in the round of 128 in the British Open. 1999 World Champion Stephen Hendry said of O’Sullivan’s performance in the Open, “…probably the worst I’ve seen Ronnie play for a good few years.”
Neil Robertson
The 2010 World Champion, Neil Robertson, has yet to play this season. The 40-year-old had three ranking tournament wins last year, including the Tour Championship, which he also won in 2021. Robertson said of sitting out the early season events, “I used to play in most tournaments, but I’m playing for fun now. I’ve got a young family now, so I don’t need to play in every tournament these days. My family is really important to me. They’re my inspiration to win.”
Despite his relaxed schedule, Robertson is the No. 3 ranked player in the world.
Judd Trump
Judd Trump was eliminated in the opening round of the 2022-23 version of the Champion’s League. He followed that by making it to the quarter-finals of the European Masters. As for the British Open, Trump made it to the last 16 before losing to eventual winner Mark Allen.
The 33-year-old Trump won the World Championship in 2019. He is currently the No .2 player in the world.
Mark Selby
Mark Selby has three World Championship wins to his name. His most recent title came in 2021. The 39-year-old is heading into the Hong Kong Masters with the most momentum of any player, having made it to the quarter-final round of the British Open.
Selby is the No. 4 ranked player in the world. He did not make it past the first group stage of the Championship League this year. Selby then lost his qualifier for the European Masters before his strong showing in the British Open.
Our pick
None of these players is exactly lighting it up in 2022-23, but any of them could win any tournament on any given day. The brackets have potential semi-final meetings between O’Sullivan and Robertson and Selby and Trump, which could make for some very interesting snooker viewing.
I think the best bet is a final matchup between the relaxed and playing for fun Robertson and Selby, with Robertson repeating as the Hong Kong Masters winner.
Pick: Neil Robertson to win the 2022 Hong Kong Masters.
