- Date: September 26, 2022, through October 2, 2022
- Location: Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes, England
The British Open was revived last year after being dormant for 17 years. The 2021 version of the snooker event was the first time the British Open had been played since 2004. John Higgins won the 2004 British Open. While Higgins didn’t repeat that feat in 2021, he did get the highest break in 2021. Mark Williams won the 2021 British Open, defeating Gary Wilson in the final.
The British Open is the third-ranking tournament of the 2022-23 snooker season. The prize pool for the British Open is one of the richest of the 2022-23 season at a total of £478,000. The winner takes home £100,000 of that amount.
The 2022-23 World Snooker Tour opened with the Championship League in June. Luca Brecel of Belgium won that event with a victory over Lu Ning of China. The second event of the season was the European Masters in August. Kyren Wilson of England defeated fellow English player Barry Hawkins in the final of that event.

Snooker British Open picks
Ronnie O’Sullivan
If there’s a snooker tournament and Ronnie O’Sullivan is playing in it, the odds are good that he is going to be the favorite to win. That is the case for the 2022 European Masters.
O’Sullivan did not have a great start to his 2022-23 season. He was eliminated in the second round of the Championship League tournament in late July. O’Sullivan withdrew from the season’s second event, the European Masters for medical reasons.
Despite his uneventful start to the 2022-23 snooker season, O’Sullivan is the No. 1 player in the World Snooker Tour rankings.
Judd Trump
Like O’Sullivan, Trump had a rough start to the 2022-23 season as he was eliminated in the opening round of the Champion’s League.
Trump fared much better in the European Masters. He made it to the quarter-finals of that event, but fell to eventual runner-up Barry Hawkins in that round 5-3.
Trump is the No. 2 ranked player in the world entering the British Open. He made it to the Last 32 in last year’s British Open.
John Higgins
John Higgins finished the 2021-22 season ranked fifth in the world. In the final two ranking events of the year, Higgins made it to the finals and semifinals. Higgins opened his 2022-23 season with a loss in the qualifying round of the European Masters. He did not compete in the Championship League event that started the season.
Higgins made it to the Last 32 in the 2021 British Open, losing 3-1 to Ricky Walden, who eventual winner Mark Willians eliminated in the quarter-finals.
Higgins remains the No. 5 ranked player in the world.
Mark Williams
The winner of the 2021 British Open, Mark Williams, is currently the No. 8 ranked player in the world.
Williams has had a reasonably strong start to his 2022-23 season. First, he made it to the second round of the Championship League. In the more recent European Masters, Williams then went to the semis before losing to eventual runner-up Barry Hawkins.
Williams is definitely in the mix to repeat as the 2022 British Open champion.
Our pick
With the 2022-23 snooker season being so young, it’s hard to get a feel as to who is playing well and who is lagging. With that, the safe beat seems to be Ronnie O’Sullivan.
The best bet for the 2022 Snooker British Open: Ronnie O’Sullivan to win.
