2022 Premier Lacrosse League Championship Picks

The 2022 season of the Premier Lacrosse League has ended and the 2022 PLL Playoffs are set to begin. The opening quarterfinal round takes place on Saturday, September 3 from Boston, MA. The following Sunday, Sept 11 marks the Semifinals in Washington DC and the Championship game goes down on September 18 in Philadelphia, PA. All games will be streamed on ESPN+. ABC will also cover the Finals.

Seven of the eight teams make the playoffs. The Cannons were the odd team out this year, with a record of 1-9. The Whipsnakes finished at 9-1 and they get a bye into the Semifinal Round of the Playoffs. The quarterfinal matchups are as follows: Chaos (2-9) vs. Chrome (7-3), Redwoods (4-6) vs. Archers (6-4) and Waterdogs (5-5) vs. Atlas (6-4).

The PLL held its first season in 2019. That year, six teams participated in the league. The Whipsnakes won the PLL Championship that year, defeating the Redwoods 12-11 in an overtime game. In 2020, the Whipsnakes repeated as champions, topping the Chaos 12-6. The 2021 season came to a close with the Whipsnakes once again playing in the final. However, the team’s run at the top of the PLL ended when they fell to the Chaos 14-9.

Whipsnakes

The two-time PLL champs opened the season with four straight wins. In their fifth game of the season, the Whipsnakes fell to the Waterdogs by the score of 11-10. The team then went undefeated for the rest of the season. They secured a bye in the first-round of the playoffs by topping the Cannons 11-9 in the final regular season game.

Despite their fantastic record, the Whipsnakes were not the highest scoring team in the PLL. The club had 118 scores for, which put them fifth among the eight teams. Where the Whipsnakes excelled was stopping the opposition from scoring. The team’s 98 scores against were the fewest in the league and the team’s plus-20 scoring differential was also the highest in the PLL.

With their history and their performance this season, the Whipsnakes are the team to beat.

Archers

The Archers finished the season with a record of 6-4 and in a tie for the PLL lead in scores with 130. The team also did a solid job of not allowing too many scores against, with 110, which put them at a plus-20 scoring differential.

The games the Archers lost were close. Two of those setbacks were one score matchups, one defeat was by two — against the Whipsnakes. Their most substantial loss was the 14-9 downfall to the Atlas. The Archers are a tough out and the team is always in the mix.

Chrome

The Chrome ended the 2022 season with a 7-3 record. The team had 120 scores for and 102 scores against. That plus-18 differential put them behind the Whipsnakes and Archers, but in front of every other team in the league.

The Chrome’s three losses came in consecutive weeks in the middle of the season and all three of those losses were by one score. The team finished the season with a three-game winning streak.

The one issue the Chrome has is that they tend to play very tight games.
