The 11th-ranking event of the 2023 snooker season, the Welsh Open, is upon us. This year, the snooker tournament takes place at Venue Cymru in Llandudno, Wales. The Welsh Open is the fourth and final tournament in the 2023 Home Nation’s Series. The other events in that series were the Northern Ireland Open, the Scottish Open and the English Open. This year’s Welsh Open takes place between February 13 and 19.
The Welsh Open follows the German Masters, which wrapped up on February 5. In an event where many of the top snooker players in the world lost in the qualifying round, Ali Carter defeated Tom Ford in the Finals.
Most of the top players who were not involved in the German Masters are back in the mix for the Welsh Open, including the No. 1 player in the world, Ronnie O’Sullivan, who withdrew from the German Masters.
Joe Perry is the defending Welsh Open champion. He defeated Judd Trump to win the title in 2022.

Ronnie O’Sullivan
The No. 1 snooker player in the world, Ronnie O’Sullivan, is playing well in non-ranking events in 2022-23. While the 47-year-old has not made it past the quarter-finals in a ranking tournament this season, O’Sullivan is two-for-two when it comes to winning non-ranking events. O’Sullivan has wins at the Hong Kong Masters and Champion of Champions. He is coming off second round losses at the Scottish Open, English Open and World Grand Prix.
O’Sullivan has four career wins the Welsh Open. His most recent victory at the event came in 2016. He made a return to the Finals in 2021, but Jordan Brown defeated him for the win. In 2022, Ricky Walden eliminated O’Sullivan in the Last 16.
Judd Trump
Currently the No. 5 ranked snooker player in the world, Judd Trump is still looking for his first ranking tournament win of 2023. Trump took the top spot in the 2023 Masters — a non-ranking event — and made the Finals of the World Grand Prix, but Mark Allen prevented him from getting the win in that event.
Trump has not fared well during the 2023 Home Nation’s Series. He was eliminated in the first round of the Northern Ireland Open and in the Quarter-Finals of both the Scottish and English Opens.
Trump has never won the Welsh Open, but he made it to the Finals in 2017 and 2022.
Neil Robertson
Neil Robertson has played well during the 2022-23 snooker season, but the No.4 ranked player in the world has yet to pick up a win this year. Robertson has made it to the semifinal round in four of the nine events he has played in this year, but he has yet to make it to the finals.
With how he has played this year, I think it’s not a matter of whether Robertson will pick up a win but when.
Robertson was one of the few top players to compete in the German Masters. Chris Wakelin eliminated him in the Last 16 in that event. Robertson has two wins at the Welsh Open — 2007 and 2019. In 2022, Robertson lost to Judd Trump in the Quarter-Finals of the event.
Best bet to win the 2023 Welsh Open
Neil Robertson is due for a breakthrough performance in 2023. He entered the year with a more relaxed approach to snooker and he has performed well. I think he is the bet to win the 2023 Welsh Open.
Pick: Neil Robertson to win the 2023 Welsh Open snooker event.
