The 2023 Repco Supercars season kicks off on March 10 with the Thrift Newcastle 500, which takes place at the Newcastle Street Circuit in New South Wales, Australia. The 2023 Supercars season runs through November 23-26 when it comes to a close with the VALO Adelaide 500, which happens at the Adelaide Street Circuit in South Australia.
The Supercars series runs on a point’s system, with the winner of the championship events being awarded points depending on the number of races at any event. For a single-race event, the victor gets 300 points. A two-race event nets the winners 150 points each, and so on down to 75 points for the winners of four race events. The system is designed for up to 30 racers to obtain points per event.
In 2022, Shane van Gisbergen won the Supercars Drivers’ Championship for the second year in a row. The 33-year-old New Zealander had 21 first-place finishes for the year and had the title wrapped up before the season’s final event. Van Gisbergen had 3,523 points on the season. He competed under the Triple Eight Race Engineering Team while driving a Commodore ZB. The runner-up in 2022 was Cameron Waters with 2,908 points. Shane van Gisbergen
The 33-year-old Shane van Gisbergen locked up back-to-back Supercars Drivers’ Championship titles with his win at the Gold Coast 500 in October. With that victory, the New Zealand-born driver claimed his third Supercars title. He first won in 2016. Van Gisbergen dominated this season. With his wins in both Gold Coast races, Van Gisbergen has 21 wins on the 2022 Supercars season.
Van Gisbergen will be behind the wheel of a Chevy Camaro ZL1-1LE as this season features the launch of the Gen3 cars. He remains with Triple Eight Race Engineering.
Chaz Mostert finished in third place in points in 2022. That marked the best career finish for the 30-year-old, who has been competing in the Supercars Championship since 2013. Mostert finished 2022 strong, taking first place at Race 1 in Adelaide and finishing as the runner-up in Race 2. Mostert had 2,835 points on the year.
In 2023, Mostert once again races for the Walkinshaw Andretti United team. He will drive a Ford Mustang GT this season.
With runner-up finishes in the Supercars Drivers’ Championship in 2020 and 2022, Cameron Waters is still looking for his first title. The 28-year-old is coming off two seasons where he won three races. His points total of 2,908 in 2022 was the highest of his career.
A member of the Tickford Racing team since 2018, Waters will be behind the wheel of a Mustang GT for the 2023 Supercars season. He has been driving the same model car since 2019, when he finished 7th in the Drivers’ Championship standings.
Best bet to win the 2023 Supercars Drivers’ Championship
Shane van Gisbergen has three Supercars Drivers’ Championships to his name (2016, 2021 and 2022). His first top-10 finish in the Drivers’ Championship came in 2010 when he placed sixth. Since then he has only dropped lower than fourth in the point’s race twice, when he finished in sixth in 2012 and fifth in 2013. In 2017, Van Gisbergen placed fourth. He was the runner-up in 2018 and 2019 and placed third in 2020. All of this is to say, there is an excellent reason Van Gisbergen is favored to take home a third straight Supercars Drivers’ Championship title in 2023.
