With 2022 just on the horizon, the snooker world turns its collective gaze to the crown jewel of the snooker world: the 2022 World Snooker Championship. Recognized as the longest-running, most prestigious, and wealthiest tournament, the 2022 World Snooker Championship will be held in April of next year. Reigning world champion Mark Selby (his fourth overall) returns to a crowded field that features a number of former world titleholders.

Judd Trump (+300)
The “Juddernaut” is 1-1 at World Championships and is looking to build on his world title resume. Trump won the 2019 World Snooker Championship with an 18-9 victory over John Higgins. This was his first appearance in the Championship final since 2011, which also featured a matchup with Higgins, a narrow 15-18 defeat. What’s interesting about Trump’s chances in 2022 is that even though he is recognized as the favorite and perhaps most dominating player in the snooker world, he has had relatively sparse success at the World Championships. However, he does have a great record against two of the other three contenders in championship finals: 4-2 against Ronnie O’Sullivan and 4-1 against Neil Robertson.

Ronnie O’Sullivan (+500)
The veteran of this group, O’Sullivan has a distinguished track record at the world championships. The Englishman is a six-time world champion and holds a 6-1 record overall in championship finals at the event, with his only loss coming to Mark Selby in the 2014 final. “The Rocket” most recently won the 2020 title with an 18-8 victory over Englishman Kyren Wilson. He is always a threat to take home a title and will make history if he does so in 2022 (the record for most world titles is seven held by Stephen Hendry).
Mark Selby (+500)
Selby is an interesting choice in this competition, in that he is a four-time world champion yet is still somewhat overshadowed by the aforementioned players in the field. However, Selby is still regarded as not only one of the greatest players in the field but one of the best of all time. So perhaps this is more of a compliment to how stacked the world championship field is. In addition to his four world titles, the reigning world champion has nine Triple Crown titles total, which is tied for fourth all-time. Could the world champion repeat and be the first to do so since 16-17? He certainly has the bonafides to do so.
Neil Robertson (+600)
Robertson rounds out out field again and the Australian is once again acknowledged as the fourth favorite right now to win the world championship in 2022. Already the greatest Australian player of all time, Robertson is also the only player from outside of the United Kingdom to have completed snooker’s Triple Crown. However, his last world championship came in 2010 and he has not made a championship final since then. Though Robertson is extremely talented, the field is just too stacked for him to make a run.
Prediction: Coming off another outstanding performance at the 2021 Champion of Champions competition, it is hard to bet against the best in the world at this point. His record against the other favorites in the field is a great indicator for future success in the competition. If Trump is on his game, look for him to take home the crown.
