Held for the first time ever in the Netherlands, the 2022 UEFA Futsal Euro tournament will kick off later this month. Recognized as the UEFA Futsal Championship, the international competition will feature 16 teams vying for futsal supremacy. For this year’s tournament, it will be the first to be held after a four-year hiatus thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is originally played every two years with the last world tournament occurring in 2018.

The most dominant team in the history of the UEFA Futsal Championship, the Spanish national team is looking to lock down its eighth world championship later this month. Spain last won the world championship back in 2016 and was runner-up to Portugal in the 2018 tournament. In the time since then, the Spanish have struggled a bit at major tournaments. In the last two editions of the FIFA World Cup (2016 and 2021), Spain finished in 5th and 6th place, respectively. While their recent performances might not have been their best, Spain has the offensive firepower to hang with any other national team.
Number Two: Portugal (Odds: TBA)
Winning their first UEFA Euro Championship in 2018, Portugal is red-hot heading into the 2022 edition. The Portuguese’s latest title actually came last year when the squad was able to lock down its first ever FIFA Futsal World Cup with a 5-2 overall record and a +24 goal differential. Going back to 2018, Portugal was dominant at the 2018 UEFA Futsal Championship with a 5-0 record and a +14 goal differential. Finding ways to win has become the specialty for Portugal and they will need it if they want to become back-to-back champions in 2022.
Number three: Italy (Odds: TBA)
One of the strongest national teams in Europe, Italy will be angling for its third ever UEFA Futsal Championship in the Netherlands. Gli Azzurri is coming off a disappointing finish at the 2020 FIFA World Cup, where they were unable to qualify, so a big bounce-back performance could be expected later this month. However, their fortunes do seem to shift historically when it comes to the UEFA Futsal Championship with first place finishes in 2003 and 2014. For an aging squad, this could be their last chance to lock down a title before a regime and roster change shakes up things.
Dark horse contender: Russia (Odds: TBA)
Our final contender spotlight, Russia has won one title at the UEFA Futsal Championship, this title coming back in 1999. A consistent medalist at the last four UEFA Futsal Championships (three silver medals and one bronze), a sure bet will be for Russia to be in the mix for the podium. While Russia has mostly dominated the rest of the world in head-to-head matchups, they have fallen short against Spain (2-16), Portugal (4-5), and Italy (5-8) on a consistent basis. With the competition being held for the first time in the Netherlands, perhaps Russia will conjure up some mojo in a new venue. Certainly, the squad has the intimidation factor nailed down, but they will need more than that if they hope to unseat the reigning favorites.
Prediction: The 2022 UEFA Futsal Euro tournament will be a nice bounce-back championship for two reasons. One, it will be the first time the tournament has been held in four years and two, it will showcase a return to dominance for Spain.
