GillesSimonDavidFerrerThe Spaniard David Ferrer will take on the French Gilles Simon this Sunday August 31st, in what should be one of the best games of the 2014 US Open third round.

Ferrer, who is one of the most dangerous players out there because of his speed and quickness, got to the third round because Bernard Tomic withdrew from their match because of a left hip injury.

“I don’t want to muck around with that area. For sure something is there. I’ve got to get it checked. It’s not good right now. It’s painful,” Tomic said. “I can’t afford to get on court and play against David and cause much more pain to myself because I’m going to have to stay with him the whole match.”

Gilles Simon advanced to this round after beating Argentinean Federico Delbonis 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, and 6-1 in the second round.  The 29-year-old Simon has never advanced more than the fourth round of the US Open, and he will have a pretty difficult challenge against the Spaniard, who’s one of the best in the world.

Simon and Ferrer has faced each other six times with the 32-year-old Spaniard leading the series five wins to one since the first time they met in 2007.  The last time they saw each other was in 2013 with 6-2, 6-3 victory by Ferrer in the round of 16 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Paris, played on a hard surface.

Simon is listed +333 to get the win in this game, according to the tennis odds, and Ferrer is -500.
