Cilic beat Thomas Berdych in the quarterfinals 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) to reach his first US Open semi-final.

“I feel I’m playing probably the best tennis of my career. I think what helped me also was the consistent play over last five, six months,” Cilic said. “I feel that it’s still a lot to improve even in some matches. I want to keep going.”

Roger Federer had to use five sets to beat Gael Monfilis; the French took a two sets advantage but then got tired, and the living legend took advantage.

“I feel lucky to be able to do a press conference as the winner instead of the loser,” Federer said later. “But I’m also proud that I fought and stayed with him. The problem was that I was just one point from the end.”

The series between Federer and Cilic had been one sided with a 5-0 lead by the Swiss.

“I’m looking forward to playing Marin,” Roger Federer said. “He’s a great guy. We had a tough, tough match in Toronto. I think I needed nine match points to close him out and beat him at midnight, 6-4 in the third, so we know what to expect.”

Cilic is listed +300 to get to the US Open, and Federer is -400, in the US money line.
