Borussia Dortmund (+177) vs Manchester City (+140), Draw (+229)
Borussia Dortmund already destroyed one team from Manchester, stomping on United a week ago (4-1). Now they look to do the same against Manchester City when they clash in the International Champions Cup this Thursday at Shenzhen Stadium in China (7:30 AM Eastern).
Dortmund looked awfully good against Manchester United and their new coach Jose Mourinho. Their 4-1 rout was a microcosm of the team’s disparate trajectories. Dortmund have been on the rise over the last few seasons while United have struggled to find consistency.
Look for Dortmund to stay aggressive against Manchester City. It’s really the only way the team knows how to play. They value ball possession, but are also great on the counterattack. And even without Marco Reus available for these preseason friendlies, the team has looked sharp and ready to roll.
City, on the other hand, are coming off a 1-0 loss to Bayern Munich last week. They looked flat, generally, but mostly they looked like a team trying to adapt to a new style of play under a new manager (Pep Guardiola).
With Guardiola, City will transition into a possession-style attack, but the Spaniard’s system isn’t just any possession-oriented scheme. His is unique in the soccer world and takes a little time to perfect.
Pep also brings in some, let’s say, unorthodox off-field requirements. This week, he banned his team from eating pizza, reasoning that he needs his players to be fast and capable of swift counterattacks.
Guardiola will have his team ready for the opening week of the English Premier League season, but they’re not there yet. Dortmund are a lot further along in their preparation and know how they want to play. They’re much better value for tomorrow’s friendly.
Pick: Dortmund (+177).
