Italy is the slight favorite to win Group D, joined by England, Uruguay and Costa Rica.  The Italians didn’t pass to the second round four years ago in South Africa, so they will be looking for redemption; they drew 1-1 against Luxemburg in their last friendly.

‘I didn’t see anything worrying, quite the opposite,’ coach Cesare Prandelli said. ‘Right now we don’t need to be talking about results. You need to look at the physical condition of the players, and we are in great physical condition.

‘Psychologically a player is going to the World Cup just wants to get through that match (Luxembourg). We didn’t put in tackles and we didn’t go in with huge determination or will to win.’

England, on the other side, hasn’t won the World Cup since 1966; they need to start this tournament with a draw, at least, to then take on Uruguay and Costa Rica.

“It has been three excellent weeks of preparation,” said England coach Roy Hodgson. “The squad is growing stronger, they are bonding together very well and the mood is one of quiet optimism and a reasonable degree of confidence. That is all you can hope for.

The World Cup odds listed the Italian’s victory +170; the English +220 and the draw is at +200.
