Golf 2021 PNC Championship Betting Guide

Typically, the final PGA event of the year — the PNC Championship, formerly known as the Father/Son Challenge — is a low-profile event. But the 2021 affair will be no such thing because a certain someone is returning to the playing field. A certain someone named Tiger Woods. With all the hoopla swirling around the tourney, we wanted to create this 2021 PNC Championship betting guide. Read on for an event preview, the latest odds per the best online sportsbooks, and our own picks to win!

2021 PNC Championship Preview

When previewing the PNC Championship, bettors need to know one thing above everything else: this isn’t a traditional golf tournament. Rather than a tourney composed of individuals trying to best each other, this is a team affair. The teams are made up of two players, who are father and son. That means PGA professionals have the choice to team up with either their dad or son to compete. Furthermore, only players that have won a major championship or The Players Championship are eligible for a playing invitation.

Twenty teams will compete for $1.085 million in total prize money. PGA players currently slated to play include the likes of Justin Thomas (the defending event champion), Matt Kuchar, Jim Furyk, Vijay Singh (the 2020 runner-up), Bubba Watson, and the biggest name of all, Woods. As usual with Tiger, he’ll be receiving the lion’s share of attention from fans, media members, and yes, you bettors. But this event is extra special because it’s Woods first of the entire year. He’ll be joined by his son, Charlie.

The duo placed seventh last year in this same event. It turned out to be the last event Woods partook in publically. Afterward, he underwent yet another back surgery (his fifth). But things went from bad to worse in February when Woods was involved in a scary car accident that almost took his life. Given the entire ordeal, no one — not even Woods — knows what to expect out of his golf game at the upcoming tourney.

Though, the format of the event, which isn’t officially sponsored by the PGA, should suit Woods and his likely limited mobility. The PNC Championship is contested over 36 holes. Given the two-person structure, each player hits from the tee and then the team chooses which tee shot to play. From there, both players hit a second shot from that spot. This process repeats until the hole is finished.

2021 PNC Championship Betting Picks

Here’s another untraditional aspect about this event: most bets pit teams against one another. As bettors, one simply chooses which team will place higher. This is a departure from the usual outright field-winner bets commonplace at other events. We had to point that out before diving into our 2021 PNC Championship betting picks.

While there are dozens of different head-to-head bets, we’ll be solely focused on Woods. Not only because that’s where all the attention is, but because that’s where the value lies among the best betting sites for golf. Allow us to explain below.

The Woods vs. The Watsons

Tiger Woods & Son+104+104
Bubba Watson & Father-135-135

Bubba Watson and his father-in-law Wayne Ball did not fare well at the 2020 event. With a -12 score, they finished 18th out of 20. For comparison’s sake, Tiger and Charlie tabbed a -20 score. But that was then and this is now. Us personally, we’re not ready to bet on Woods until we see what kind of shape he’s in. If we had to guess, we’d say Woods is not in good form — nor should he be after almost dying 10 months ago.

Of course, Tiger is not alone in this. Charlie is also there and he did look good at this tournament a year ago. In particular, the now 12-year-old showed touch in his short game and an excellent swing. He could have a real future in this sport when he gets older. But for now, young Charlie is not good enough to carry a bent-out-of-shape Woods. Bet on the Watsons to outscore them at the PNC Championship.

The Woods vs. The Stensons

Tiger Woods & Son+108+108
Henrik Stenson & Son-140-140

There’s really no need to repeat ourselves with this bet. Everything we said above also applies here. Namely, there’s too much unknown with Woods to draw a bet from us. But that unknown makes for an excellent opportunity to fade him and his son. Therefore, Henrik Stenson and his son draw our bet here, no questions asked.
