Who Is Playing At The 2022 US Open?

The question of who is playing in the US Open has taken a different meaning in 2022. That’s because the Saudi-backed LIV Golf league is up and running — and PGA players are “defecting” to it, risking a ban from the Tour. The list of defectors includes the likes of Bryson DeChambeau, Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, and most notably, Phil Mickelson. The number of players could grow (it’s already at 20) to more considering the amount of money the Saudi Arabia government is dangling in front of them.

However, many of the LIV Golf defectors are eligible to play at the US Open this week. The tourney organizers, The United States Golf Association, made it clear they are an open championship, available to all, including LIV golfers. The PGA Tour has no jurisdiction over the majors, hence the decision — which feels like a sign to come for other majors too.

The PGA vs LIV Golf clash has “stole the show” in Massachusetts given the inter-mixing parties. But the show must go on and there’s still $12.5 million on the line at the US Open (though, perhaps that’s peanuts compared to the Saudi “blood” money). A field of 156 players will compete for the prize. Of the world’s top 30-ranked golfers, 29 are in Massachusetts for this event. The one exception is Paul Casey (ranked 27th overall), who has an injured back.

2022 US Open Betting Advice

Our advice on betting the 2022 US Open includes not just golfers to pick, but ones to avoid — which is just as important. There’s a lot to cover so let’s dive right into it:

Ride Rory’s Momentum

Rory McIlroy is the favorite to win across popular golf betting sites. Sure, it’s been eight years since McIlroy last won a major — but you can’t deny the heater he’s been on most of 2022. He’s fresh off winning the Canadien Open and damn near won at the PGA Championship. It’s almost a guarantee McIlroy finds himself in the title hunt, and that’s worth taking him to win straight up. At the very least, bet on his prop to finish top-10.

Avoid Mickelson At All Costs

No one’s under a bigger magnifying glass this week than Lefty. Mickelson is both a player trying to complete the career grand slam and the unofficial face of the LIV league. But perhaps more than that, at least in the context of this event, he’s a player with a whole lot of rust. Mickelson has played just three rounds of competitive golf in the last five months or so.

We’d avoid gambling on Mickelson — more due to that lack of competition this year than the massive distractions over his head (though that can’t help either). It’s just not a winning combination, especially at a major tournament.

John Rahm

It’s not often you get Rahm — the number-two ranked player in the world — at +1300 odds. For a player of his caliber, that feels like value. No, he hasn’t had a particularly good 2022 campaign, but this is still Rahm we’re talking about, one of the world’s best. The Spaniard is worth a bet based on his elite ability off the tee, which is well suited for this course. He’s a steal at this betting price.

How To Watch & Bet The 2022 US Open

All things considered, the 2022 US Open is shaping up to be must-watch television. To see everything live, your best bets will be the USA Network and NBC. Both will split TV coverage of the 2022 event. Here’s the viewing schedule:

  • Thursday, June 16 — 9:30 am to 2 pm EST (USA Network): 2 pm to 5 pm EST (NBC); 5 pm to 7 pm (USA Network)
  • Friday, June 17 — 9:30 am to 4 pm EST (USA Network): 4 pm to 7 pm EST (NBC)
  • Saturday, June 18 — 12 pm to 8 pm EST (NBC)
  • Sunday, June 19 — 10 am to 12 pm EST (USA Network); 12 pm to 7 pm EST (NBC)

Those looking to stream have two options — NBC’s own Peacock app and “skinny bundles” like fuboTV or Hulu + Live TV, which carry channels like NBC and USA Network. So as you can see, viewing options are abundant and we haven’t even mentioned the US Open’s own site and app, which also have light coverage.
