Scottie Scheffler+225+225
Patrick Cantlay+300+300

Rory McIlroy+900+900
Jon Rahm+1200+1200
Tony Finau+1800+1800

2022 Tour Championship Preview

Earlier when we said the event was non traditional, we meant it. We’ll be focusing on these abnormalities when previewing the 2022 Tour Championship. First up, there’s only 30 players competing — which helps explain why the outright betting odds are lower than usual. The 30-player selection is based on current FedExCup standings, which means no LIV “defectors” are in the mix.

But the most defining feature of the event is the staggered start. The 30-player field will not be starting Round 1 with a clean slate. Instead, each player’s starting stroke will hinge on their current standings in the FedExCup. Stick with us here because we have an easy-to-understand example to explain it all.

Going into the finale, Scottie Scheffler ranks first overall in the Cup standings. To reward his stellar regular season performance, he’ll begin the Players Championship with a “head start” at 10-under. Second-ranked Patrick Cantlay begins 8-under, third-place Will Zalatoris is 7-under, and the starting stroke pushes lower the less ranked you are (players No. 26 through 30 begin at even par).

The player who finishes the four-round event at Atlanta’s East Lake Golf Club with the lowest score in relation to par will win the FedExCup and $18 million of prize money. Another $6.5 million is reserved for the runner-up and no player will leave the field with less than $120,000 won. For what it’s worth, any and all FedExCup bonus money is not considered part of a player’s official earnings for the 2022 season.

The East Lake Golf Club has been the year-in, year-out home of the Players Championship since 2004. It’s a par-70 that extends to 7,346 yards, so even for the “best of the best” — which this field is — the course won’t be for the faint of heart.

Best Bets To Win 2022 Tour Championship

We’re sticking with our tried-and-true betting strategy for winning at the 2022 Tour Championship: wager on more than one player. That’s a no-brainer when the playing field is 150+ like a standard PGA event, but the same goes here — in spite of the staggered start and tempered betting lines. In particular, we’re eying two players for bets:

Scottie Scheffler

Picking the betting frontrunner at top golf betting sites might not be the sexy pick here, but it’s certainly the smart pick. Starting the event 10-under is not a small advantage — no, it’s a massive one. And Scheffler deserves the head start because he’s been far and away the best PGA player this long season that begun last September.

Here’s Scheffler’s resume in a nutshell: four titles (most in the whole tour), including a major and a WGC. Four more runner-up finishes to go along that. Oh, and he tied for third at last week’s BMW Championship, so it’s not like all of Scheffler’s success came early in the year despite it feeling that way.

We also can’t help but remember Scheffler’s sensational performance here in 2020. Schauffele had the lowest score over 72 holes at 15-under 265. However, his starting spot (No. 14) was too much to overcome as Scheffler finished three shots behind the winner.

Similarly, we expect many top players to be somewhat automatic eliminations because they’re starting so back of Scheffler and company. That only makes the betting case for Scheffler stronger than it already is.

Rory McIlroy

Admittedly, McIlroy is in a bit of a hole to start off the tournament. He’ll begin a half-dozen strokes behind the aforementioned leader, Scheffler at minus-4. But if there’s one player that can make up ground and take the outright victory, we’re betting that it’s McIlroy.

Why? Welp, because McIlroy seems to thrive when he’s down — not up. There’s numerous instances this year where McIlroy caught up to tourney leaders after a slow start. An aggressive McIlroy is a dangerous McIlroy and that’s the exact position we expect him to be in. Take his +900 betting line, which is pure value here.
