Best Bet: Xander Schauffele Improves on his 2020 Runner-up at the CJ Cup
Xander Schauffele finished second at the 2020 CJ Cup – with a -18 at the Shadow Creek Golf Club in Nevada. With the tournament staying in Nevada, Xander Schauffele has a chance to use what he learned from last time to improve on his 2020 showing.
Of course, Schauffele’s runner-up is not the only reason we are backing him in 2021. Schauffele is one of the best golfers in the world. Schauffele finished last season tied for fifth in the FedEx Cup Standings. He finished fifth in Strokes Gained: Total last year at 1.484.

Schauffele is a very well-rounded golfer. He is smooth off the tee and excellent on the green. Overall, he has the skills to play well in the Nevada swing and with a smaller field than other events he faces less competition (when compared to other tournaments and Majors).
He is also due for a win. Schauffele was the best golfer last season to not pick up a win. However, he was competitive with eight top-10 finishes. He is our pick for the best bet to win the 2021 CJ Cup.
Tony Finau to Shine in Nevada
The guy with the mid-range golf betting odds to win the 2021 CJ Cup we like is Tony Finau. Finau – a native of Salt Lake City, Utah – grew up playing golf in the region and the desert courses known for their dry conditions and sand.
The course is also comparable to Owings Mills – the site of the 2021 BMW Championship. Finau finished 15th at the event – with his -9 round on the Sunday one of the best showings of anyone at the tournament.
There is also positive news on Finau’s health going into the tournament. Finau – after helping the Americans capture the 2021 Ryder Cup – skipped out of the following tournaments. However, he looks healthy going into the tournament – looking to build off a strong showing at the Ryder Cup.
Another reason we like Tony Finau as a moderate underdog is his abilities off the tee. Finau averaged 305.5 yards per drive last season, which was good enough for 31st on the Tour last season. Another strength – if Finau’s drives end up in the sand – is his ability to recover. Finau was third last year on the PGA Tour – averaging shots landing only seven yards in proximity to a hole from the sand.
Emiliano Grillo is the Big Underdog to Bet
If you want to take a swing at a big underdog at the 2021 CJ Cup – Emiliano Grillo is the golfer to back. Grillo is one of the most underappreciated golfers on the PGA Tour. He ranked third last season in Greens in Regulation Percentage and 12th in Strokes Gained: Approach the Green.

His skills were on full display at the 2021 Open Championship where Grillo had his best showing at a Major – finishing 12th.
Grillo should play well off the tees and set himself up with good shots (which is when he is at his best). The fairways should also play his strengths – with the dry conditions helping him get a little extra on his first shots on par fours and fives.
Grillo also had one of the best showings during the 2019-20 PGA Tour season at the 2019 CJ Cup. Grillo made the cut at -9, eventually finishing the tournament in a tie for 26th. If he did not shoot +1 over the final two days of the season – more people would be higher on Grillo going into the 2021 CJ Cup. Overall, it is hard to find better betting value at the CJ Cup than what is available on Emiliano Grillo.
