Who’s Playing At The 2023 Genesis Invitational?

The question is not so much who is playing at the 2023 Genesis, it’s more like, who’s NOT playing? Twenty-three of the top 25 in the Official World Golf Rankings will be teeing it up at the Riviera Country Club in west Los Angeles. Scheffler just overtook McIlroy for the No. 1-ranked spot with a triumphant win at last weekend’s Phoenix Open so extra eyeballs will be on both as they duke it out for world supremacy. With so much talent in LA, it’s a nice tune-up for the upcoming Masters, which is only seven weeks away.

We’ve neglected to mention another name in the field at Riviera — Tiger Woods. That’s right, the all-timer is back, competing in his first PGA event since last July’s Open Championship. Getting Tiger in action at a non-major is especially a surprise. The last time he’s done so was in 2020. He’s coming up on the second year anniversary of a scary car crash that could’ve been fatal. Because of the accident, Woods played all of nine competitive rounds in 2022. As you can imagine, Woods is a longshot to win with +13000 odds.

The Riviera Country Club is a Par 71 course that measures just over 7,300 yards. Many players believe it plays somewhat like the Augusta National Golf Club, which again is why we get the sense it’s a preview of the Masters in early April. Driving distance is put at a premium in Riviera, in part due to the bevy of undulations in the fairways and on the greens. The course has played host to this event since 1999. Joaquin Niemann won the competition last time out by two strokes (over Cameron Young and Morikawa).

Best Bets For 2023 Genesis Invitational?

You know how it goes with golf, you can’t “put all your eggs in one basket” when it comes to betting. No way — not with playing fields this large and this good. For that reason, we’re laying three bets on three players to win the 2023 Genesis Invitational. Here’s who we got:

Rory McIlroy

Because McIlroy had a rough go in Phoenix last week — he tied for 32nd — some bettors are running away from McIlroy this weekend. Not us, though. Look, one bad outing (in windy conditions, no less) isn’t enough to discredit the run McIlroy has been on for the past few months, which is among his career best.

Plus, Riviera has been mostly kind to McIlroy over recent years. He finished top-5 here back in 2019 and 2020. McIlroy missed the cut in 2021, but rebounded with a T10 last year. All this makes Rory a solid pick going into the event.

Tony Finau

Honestly, we’re a little shocked that Finau is only +1600 to win. We think that’s a little underpriced for the 13-ranked player in the world. We say that because Finau has quite a good history playing in Riviera. On two different occasions, Finau has placed second at the Genesis. That recent history (he also has three wins in his last 12 tournaments in general) makes him a worthy bet at these odds.

Adam Scott

Alright, we had to pick a dark horse for our third and final bet. Scott is the exact player that could sneak up on the competition and earn a hefty payout for bettors willing to jump on his long odds. Put simply, Scott excels at Riviera. Technically speaking, he won the 2005 event here but because rain shortened it to only 36 holes, Scott rarely gets credit for it. Nonetheless, since then, Scott owns seven top-10s and four top-twos in 14 career starts at the course. Doesn’t his +5500 line feel long given that history? We think so, hence our bet here!
