Opening 2021 Masters Odds Favor Reigning Champ Dustin Johnson

  • BetOnline and Bovada list Dustin Johnson (+600) as the early favorite to win The Masters Tournament in April
  • Brooks Koepka (+1400) is apparently “pain-free” for the first time in months
  • Australian Cameron Smith is available at +7500 despite tying for second at Augusta last November

After winning The Masters Tournament in November with a record score of 20-under-par, Dustin Johnson is heavily favored to repeat at Augusta National Golf Club this April as The Masters returns to its rightful place on the sport’s calendar.

So, is Mr. Paulina Gretzky a lock to win back-to-back championships? Let’s look at the early odds for the event and discuss some other top contenders in the field.

Dustin Johnson favored for another green jacket

Prior to tying for eighth at last weekend’s Genesis Invitational, Dustin Johnson (+600) had captured four victories and three runner-ups in his past ten starts. Johnson is looking to become the first player to win back-to-back Masters championships since Tiger Woods in 2002.

Speaking of Tiger, the six-time Masters champion suffered multiple leg injuries in a car accident Tuesday and was already no lock to play in the tournament after undergoing a fifth back surgery in December.

Rory McIlroy (+1300) and Brooks Koepka (+1400) are still looking for their first victories at Augusta National. After missing his first cut in 30 events at Riviera last week, the 31-year-old McIlroy has now gone nearly 16 months and 22 tournaments without lifting a trophy.

While Koepka’s performance at the Genesis Invitational was almost as underwhelming, the four-time major championship winner says his long-standing neck pain is finally gone, and he did tie for second at the Masters in 2019.

Other Masters Contenders

Heading into this week’s WGC-Workday Championship, Jon Rahm (+1400) has been a model of consistency, placing in the top ten in five of his past six outings.

The Spaniard shot a hole-in-one in the 2020 Masters, finishing the tournament tied for seventh, but don’t bet on him just yet. Rahm’s wife is due with the couple’s first child sometime between mid-March and early April, and he’s said he “would never miss the birth of my firstborn in a million years.”

Without a win since 2017, former Masters champion Jordan Spieth (+1400) is also seen as a contender after getting his game back in recent weeks. Golf’s former golden boy landed consecutive top-5 finishes at the Waste Management Phoenix Open (T-4) and the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am (T-3) before tying for 15th at Riviera on Sunday.

Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas are next on the board at +1600, but it’s hard to trust either after both missed the cut at the Genesis Invitational. We prefer a long-shot wager on Cameron Smith (+7500). The 27-year-old Aussie just placed fourth at Riviera and tied for second at last year’s Masters, shooting a 15-under-par 273.
